Since time immemorial, three ancient weapons had been instrumental in Humanity's history.
The Angelus, weapon of Law. It advocated Order to such a degree that in comparison, Crystal Tokyo was an anarchist community. Only a woman could be its host and was immortal as long as it stayed with her.
The Witchblade, weapon of Destruction. It was neutral and existed only to keep the two others in line. Like the Angelus, only a woman could wield it but the Witchblade would change hosts when they died or didn't suit it anymore. Of the three, it had the most powerful and independant will.
The Darkness, weapon of Chaos. Technically the most powerful of the three since Chaos is the source of All. In opposition to the others, the Darkness took a male host and was transmitted from father to son in a same bloodline : the Estacados.
Decades ago, the Angelus and the Darkness met on the field of battle. It wasn't the first time nor would it be the last. Only this time, Diego Estacado died without a son, sending the hostless Darkness in Limbo. The Angelus' victory was short-lived as it was forced out of this world by the Powers that Be to preserve Balance. Only the Witchblade remained because it was neutral. Unwittingly, Genma Saotome had opened a rift to the dimension where the Darkness had been exiled.
Horrified, he could only watch as what looked like liquid shadow bled from the portal and threw itself at his son. Ranma felt excruciating pain as the Darkness entered forcefully his helpless body by his mouth, his nose, his ears and even the pores of his skin. He lost all sense of time, there was only suffering then it stopped abruptly.
The morning after, Genma burned the scroll he used for the ceremony. Days passed without Ranma exhibiting any strange behavior or physical change. Soon, with enough sake, Genma convinced himself that it had been only a nightmare and promptly forgot about it. Ranma supressed the memories deep in his subconscious to get over the trauma. the two Saotomes went on with their lives, ignoring the terrible power now slumbering in Ranma's body.
But now it is time for the Darkness to be let out...
