However, she couldn't figure out who the caller was talking about. Many of her friends didn't have kids, but those that did were not the type to leave them behind. Even Kuno, who was at best an annoyance with his constant need to demand that she investigate 'the pigtailed girl's murder', wouldn't just leave his kids. The only friends that she had who could possibly leave their offspring behind were the Hibikis and they never did that intentionally.
But not even they had any enemies who would really cause any danger for the kids. Of course, that was what she had thought about Ranma all those years ago...
Eyes widening in sudden realization, she grabbed the phone and stabbed the number of the Hibikis' farm into the keypad. Biting her lip, she murmured, "Come on, be there... Please be there..."
After a several rings, it was picked up and Akari's voice came through the line. *"Hello, Hibiki residence."*
"Akari? It's Nabiki."
*"Oh, hi! We're sorry to have missed you, but I'm sure that we can work out another time for a visit."*
"Sure, but that's not why I'm calling. Are Tarou and Kiima still there?"
*"Yes. Do you want to speak to them?"*
"Please."
*"Just a moment..,"* Akari told her, and there was the sound of the handset being put down.
Nervous and for once, incapable of sitting still, Nabiki pulled a pen out and tapped it on her desk.
*"What is it?" came Kiima's voice after what seemed to be an interminable time.
"I just got a very strange call."
*"So?"*
"The caller spoke about people knowing a friend of mine left children, and the only one I can think of is..."
*"Ranma."*
"Exactly."
*"Are you sure that's what it means?"*
"As much as I can be, with the person only on long enough to tell me that."
*"I see... We'll take appropriate actions."*
"Good. I'll see what I can do, but if you need anything..."
*"I will contact you if I need to."*
"Okay. Take care of yourselves, and remember, stay out of their way. We don't want to have any sort of... problem right now," Nabiki reminded her.
*"Understandable."*
"I guess that I'll see you later then."
*"Until then,"* Kiima told her.
"Until then," Nabiki repeated and hung up her phone. Then she sat back and blew a breath out. That was something that she hoped would not happen, but it seemed that it had. All she could do for the moment was work on ways that she could help deal with it while:
