Back in China when she and her father had come across the old timey village and eaten the 1st prize for the tournament Ranko had no idea of what the writting meant, and she felt that another minute would cause her to drop from starvation.
Then came the battle against Shampoo that her father had forced her into the battle by tossing her up on the log. It had seemed to simple and innocent at the time, just win a little battle and have enough food to last a day; two if they rationed it out.
Shampoo had lost easily enough. Although the girl had a good offense, but she tended to underestamate opponets and leave herself open in numerous places. So one well placed kick and Ranko had one her prize. The other girl had even seemed to give her a kiss of congradulations afterwards, only as it happened that kiss was a promise to hunt Ranko down to the ends of the Earth and kill her.
The following months when Ranko and her father traveled back to Japan had been a virtual nightmare. One of them had to almost always stay awake to make sure Shampoo didn't sneak up in the night, more than often that one was Ranko with Genma as her father, and during the day they never seemed to get a moments peace.
When Ranko had finally returned to Japan with her father she thought it was over. Shampoo wouldn't run off to a country that she knew nothing about, with no knowlage of how to even speak the knowlage just because Ranko had baten her in a little tournament, right?
Well, the first few weeks had been calm. Genma had taken her to another master of Anything Goes and they spent some time there before Ranko finally got the old man to take her back home to mother; being able to turn into a big mean-looking tiger when your father's form was a panda did wonders for the intimidation factor.
But a few days after Ranko had finally been reunited with her mother, Shampoo had tracked her down. The 'hunt' started up again with attacks by Shampoo at the school, her house, the Tendo's, and it didn't help much that the girl was staying at the clinic.
In the end that's probably what caused her to get found out. With Shampoo staying at Dr. Tofu's, Ranko had come to rely on just changing into her were form to heal the injuries. With the way Shampoo kept popping out of nowhere it was only a matter of time until she had been found out.
Then one day Ranko got a challenge letter from Shampoo. The Amazon had said that she would settle things once and for all with 'fake Musk' girl, whatever the heck that meant. Of course being a practitioner of Anything Goes she couldn't step down from a challenge, it was part of the Anything Goes code.
But when Ranko arrived at the meeting place she had done a lot more than her usual routine of just jump out with a 'die Ranko' battlecry. The whole place had been rigged with tripwires attached to some kind of crossbows, that coincidentally had silver tiped arrows positioned to go through her gut, however after Ranko changed her added height changed the targets to her legs.
In the end Shampoo didn't really do much damage to the werecreature herself with that oversized silver sword, but her traps made that quite unnecessary. After taking two arrows in each leg the tiger girl had given into the pain and when Shampoo shouted another battlecry for what would be a killing blow, Ranko had just lashed out desperately with all the strength she had left.
It was more than enough to put the Amazon in a coma and break a few of her bones apparently. The last thing Ranko actually remembered of the fight was seeing the Chinese girl collapse in a heap before another silver arrow imbeded itself in her back and caused the weretiger to pass out from the pain before she had seen whatever mauled Shampoo.
Then a week later Ranko had awoken in the hospital, and Shampoo was still there to this day.
