It was money. He'd not seen a lot of it in his life, but the moment he saw the little stacks of bills he could identify the substance.

There were bundles of the stuff.

More to the point it was:

gold. bars and/or coins of the heavy but precious metal.
stacks of various denominations of foreign currency.
a pile of yen notes. Lots of them. Who could have left them?
something else
