Meaty thwacks and coarse laughter reached Ranma, and he ran by impulse to find the encampment.

Had they been prepared for people who weren't exhausted, hungry, and running for their lives - Ranma might have ended up dead. Had the villains not been completely surprised, Ranma wouldn't have had a very easy time at all.

Even so, one of the torturers clipped his head with a mace and caused the world to shiver and spin in Ranma's head.

Finally though he stood in the encampment, the sob of some poor tortured soul the only sound besides his own panting and the crackling of the fire.

When he'd finally gotten the post-adrenal reactions out of the way, Ranma found that the surviving refugee(s) was(were):

• a hatchling black dragon in a cage.
• a pair of twin drow elven maidens who have forsaken Lolth and were fleeing the Underdark.
• some little child whom the goblins had been ready to throw in a stewpot.
• a pair of surface elves who have just escaped the tortures of the drow.
• something else or should that be someone else
