"Ah, I see you found the paper," he said.
"Robin Hood or Common Thief..." Ryouga read, frowning.
****
"Common thief!" Ranma hissed. "COMMON!"
****
"A Bonnie and Clyde for the new age," Gordon read, frowning as he got past the second headline and moved to the story itself. "Witnesses at a social occasion at the Falconi residence..."
****
"...report that the mysterious Batman appeared at the party and assaulted several members of the party," Ryouga read on. "But not before the equally shadowy Catwoman was seen..."
****
"I'll show them COMMON!" Ranma continued to growl.
She hadn't quite gotten past the first line.
****
"...marking her territory," Gordon continued, shaking his head. "The press always has to play things up, doesn't it."
****
"Well, I'm sure the woman must be getting a little bit of a thrill out of that portion at least," Alfred said with a touch of wry humor. "From what you told me."
Ryouga's cheeks colored faintly as he remembered the kiss the woman had given him before escaping.
****
"Rrrr!"
****
"This doesn't fit what we know about either of them," Gordon said. "Catwoman makes a point about letting people know it was her, but we only hear of Batman through rumors and traces."
"Why shouldn't the two freaks work together?" Detective Flass asked.
****
"This isn't important," Ryouga said. "Aside from one thing, why do you think the Falconi's let this information out to the press?"
****
"Marking her territory?" Ranma read...finally. "Heh, I can almost forgive the common remark for that. Almost."
****
"I think it's more likely that they ran into each other by accident," Gordon said. "But the situation is getting more serious. With both these loose cannons inciting the gangs, it will get extreme. We have to stop them."
"It will happen," Flass said dismissively. "In the meantime get your best shirt on, Jimmy. Police Man's Ball, you know."
****
"Might I remind you, sir," Alfred said. "That this year's policeman's ball is happening soon. Will you be attending?"
"I think so," Ryouga said, rubbing at the watch that let him find his way. "I want to get a better feel for some of the police."
The police were crooked, he knew that. He even knew some names, but he wanted to see who else gravitated toward which company. And he wanted to keep an eye on Gordon as well, the man was pushing hard to track down the Batman. And after his and Catwoman's escapades of the previous night, there was going to be a stronger push to deal with him.
****
"On to business," Ranma said, changing pages. "Police Man's Ball, to get a few names to go with faces."
She had to be careful, of course. Most men rarely cared to look long at her face, but there might be someone there that remembered her nonetheless.
She looked at herself in the mirror and down at the ticket on her desk in the small apartment.
****
"Right, the Police Man's Ball," Gordon said, a little irritated at the idea of this party interrupting his hunt for the Bat.
"There'll be a few heavy rollers attending," Flass said. "I understood even that Ryoga Hibiki will be there."
Gordon dismissed that for the moment, aware of the head of Wayne Enterprises but not having any reason to think very much about him. Not yet at least. However, the assistant DA would be there, and that was currently his best suspect for the batman.
