"What the hell happened?" asked Yuri in a voice that was half panic, half panic pretending to be control.
"I dunno, I found him after the static -- he's unconscious, his pressure suit's taking on water, and his right arm... well, it's gone. It's like the sleeve of his suit is filled with jelly."
Shit. Shit shit shit. The voice in the back of Yuri's head sang a triumphany melody as he tried to get his thoughts together, slowly drifing down the sideways corridor. There was definitely SOMETHING down here with them... but what? The aliens couldn't have lasted this long without air, and they probably were genetically engineered to die by now even if they could breathe. Besides, their plasma weapons couldn't work underwater... so what was it?
Yuri had no idea. But he knew it was something incredibly bad.
"Wallace, are you all right?"
"I shit in my drawers," he said matter-of-factly, "but I'm okay."
"Good," said Yuri as he swatted his way through the bubbles to find a hiding place. "Now I want you to listen very carefully. In the back of the Triton, near the sonar display, there should be a weapons locker. Do you see it?"
"Yeah," said Wallace, "Bright orange with a keypad on it?"
Yuri nodded, even though nobody could see him. "The passcode is 8675309. Open it up, ther should be six dart pistols and twelve dart clips. Are they in there?"
"Yeah, they're all here."
Yuri forced his prybar into a doorway he'd already passed, opening a small room that seemed like a storage compartment. The water was hazy with dissolved alien alloys, and unidentifiable chunks of metal began to drift out, but it would be good enough for him. "Take one, and give one to Tower in case he wakes up. Put the spare pistols in your belt, get rid of your tools if you have to to carry them. Then I want you to come back to the wreck and find us."
"What about Tower? I can't leave him like this!"
"There's nothing we can do for him down here. We just have to concentrate on getting everyone out of this wreck for now. I want you to update your position every 30 seconds over radio, and if anybody is near him, say so. People -- until Wallace finds you and gets you a gun, don't MOVE. Don't go out looking for him, don't try to escape on your own. Find somewhere and hide. We don't know what there is down here and how many there are, so we want to try and avoid them seeing us."
Frost's voice was small, like a child's. "Uh... too late, boss..."
It looked like a Sectoid, only it didn't. The size and shape was the same, as were the huge almond eyes, but its skin was a bluish green and its body was lined with yellow fins. Its tiny neck had gills that could be seen working the water in and out, in and out. And it held a small, oddly shaped pistol pointed at Frost's head.
