Doctor Ian McArthur sighed as looked up into the pitch black sky. Earth hung just a bit over the horizon and he could see a hurricane forming in the Gulf of Mexico. Sometimes he asked himself why he said yes when the 'Inner Circle' asked him to be part in this project. Than he looked up into the sky and the quiet dusty dessert of the moons surface and knew exactly why he had done it.
"You comin', Ian?" he could hear a female voice over radio.
"Just a moment," he replied.
He let his gaze wander over the plain of Mare Tranquillitatis. Just ten kilometers away he could see the Apollo 11 landing site.
He had to smile. He had been one of the first five 'Astronauts' of the 'Inner Circle' to land on the moon and create 'Tranquillity Base', back in the middle 70's. He had lived in his suit for three month before they had found something they never expected. An system of caves. Later these caves had been exposed as what they really were. A 10.000 year old bunker system. They had never been able to uncover who build this bunker. At least until that alien invader, Kachoo came and some girls from Japan went to defeat him.
Well, that was history. They had lost contact to the 'Inner Circle' three days ago, when Kachoo wont the United States. Now they were left alone. Not that it was a problem since 'Tranquillity Base' was completely autark. Okay they had some problems in the past, but they had used some of the technology they found in the bunker and some they found in other ruins on the moon.
He turned around to go to the main airlock of the base as something caught his interest. A white glowing sphere descended from the sky towards the Apollo 11 landing site. He raised an eyebrow.
"Ian, you should come in here," the voice said." We got some problems in here."
Ian blinked.
"What problems?"
"Some of the old computers of the bunker just went online. And..."
The radio went static.
"Mara? Mara!"
Without a second thought he jumped to the airlock and opened it. He closed the outer lock he could hear the low fizzling of the air that was pressing into the small airlock. As it was save he opened his helmet and began to speed-undress the suit. He literally jumped through the open inner lock and ran towards the main center of the base.
All he could think about was his wife Mara and their twin kids. When something happened with those old computers and the radio went static, they could be in danger. He entered the main center, stopped and stared at the holographic image in the middle of the room, surrounded by all 35 people living in the base.
