Once upon a time, there was a magical civilization on the Moon.
While Earth's dominant species was Humanity, the Moon was inhabited by animal/human hybrids of the furry persuasion. All attractive, powerful, long-lived and nice people to boot. It was not an utopia but a kingdom where the 'Good Life' was the way of life, so to speak. The planet of Doctor Moreau but with a benevolent queen in charge. And sometimes, a few of them would come down to Earth.
The legends of the furry people of the Moon had survived but the reality behind them had been severely distorted. That's where the myths of werewolves, catgirls, kitsune, hengeyokai and other animal shapeshifters had come from...
The furry kingdom didn't have a standing army (whatever for?). The queen had an honor guard of magical warriors though, the furry senshi! Eight women blessed with mystic power over an element, each named after the planets of the Solar System. They were more than enough to protect their Queen and their Kingdom from the rare internal and rarer external threat.
Then one day, THEY came...

From the distant star the astronomers would name Algol centuries later, the reptilian people of the scalies (the furries' nickname for them, their true name being unpronouncable for those who lacked forked tongues) arrived in search of a new homeworld. Negociating for settling lands with inferior mammals only good to be eaten (especially the mouse furries) didn't come to their minds so they decided to take what they wanted by force.
The scalies became the source for the earth legends of snake-people, dragons, nagas, lizardmen and the likes... Their unprovoked attack and invasion of the Moon Furry Kingdom explained why they were almost always reviled in the old stories.
The furries and the scalies almost annihililated each other. In the final battle, queen Serenity used the last of their magical power to send her daughter, the furry senshi and the remaining survivors to Earth. However, a last-second screw-up in the spell made it so that their essences would be reincarnated into humans in the Future.
As she used all the mana of the Moon to power that last spell, the whole planet was reduced into a dead airless rock. The few surviving scalies had no choice but to flee to Earth as well.
Too weakened and few in numbers to establish themselves on Earth, the scalies had no choice but to go deep underground, hunted all the way by the humans. There, in the deepest caverns of Earth, they settled and rebuilt their empire, waiting for the day where they could go back to the Surface and take it from the hairless apes who ruled it.
That time was growing near. Already the reptilian empire was sending scouts in Japan, Tokyo more particularly, to assess the resistance and level of humans. Their disguised agents would also try to sow chaos among human nations and capture magical artifacts, mystic energy and victims for their sacrificial rites. Magic being a thing of the past, it seemed no one could be able to stop the scalies' plans.
Fortunately for the unknowing masses of Earth, the Furry Senshi had been finally reincarnated on Earth and awakened to continue the fight against their old enemy.

Setsuna took a good look at herself now that she had calmed down a little.
As Furry Senshi Pluto, she was a cat anthropomorph. A thin coat of dark green fur covered her whole body with only a few spots remaining hairless. Cat ears had sprouted on the top of her head and a furry tail was twitching behind her. Her body measurements had gotten a boost as well, she was taller, bustier, curvier... You get the idea. A look in the garnet orb showed her that her nekomimi breed was something resembling the Chartreux housecat.
Her sailor uniform was mostly the same, adjusted to her new form (much more form-fitting too, read 'tight in all the right places'). The Time key had gotten a makeover and looked like less, how could she put it, 'toy-looking', yes. Now it appeared as a viable and evident weapon in her hands.
"C... c... c... ca... caaaa..."
Setsuna blinked. The boy she had woken up with had retreated to a corner of the room and was obviously shivering in fear. How odd. For her part, he looked cute, in a furless monkey kind of way, and smelled nice.
It's a mystery of the Universe but cats always go for the people who are allergic to them or who don't like them when they can. Catgirls suffered from the same urge, it seemed.
Thinking about the situation for a few seconds, Setsuna decided to...
