He screamed.
Raw power coursed through his body in a dazzling display of blue and green light as the very essence of Magic fused with his being.
Genma and the genies were forced to shield their eyes from the sight, as the light's intensity grew to bright for them to bear.
And a species that had been driven to extinction countless ages ago...was reborn.
As a species the Dragons had always been creatures especially blessed by Magic's touch, with armored bodies impervious to normal weapons, powerful breath attacks, a virtual arsenal of spells at their disposal as they grew older, and a lifespan on the order of geological measurements. But even among the various sub-genres, the Rainbow Dragons had stood out.
While the other clans could wield magic as weapon or tool, they were as one with the streams of power. Not even the most ancient of golds or silvers could match a Rainbow Dragon's talent with the arcane. And their deadly Prismatic breath attack was one of the deadliest known. But this gift had its price, leaving the Rainbows smaller on average then almost all of their dragon-kin, and less armored as well. Though they were all but immune to spells, their sparkling scales were more vulnerable to the attacks of the more physically powerful reds and blacks. And while most dragons were not particularly fertile, laying eggs every few decades or centuries, they were even less so. A mated pair producing a viable clutch perhaps once every thousand years.
Then it had been discovered that the power that ran in the Dragon's very veins could be put to use by others...
In the end, the slaughter for their blood, bodies, and bones was what finally wiped out these good-natured but ever so rare Dragons.
And so it had remained...until now.
