“I’m Terra. And you had me worried for a moment.”
Ranma squinted, as the glare from sun directly overhead obscured his view of the person. “Worried? Why?”
Terra giggled. “Well you did just get stampeded by a herd of Chocobos.”
“Chocobos,” Said Ranma, “Is that what those yellow things were?” Terra nodded. “Oh, Okay.”
Terra offered a hand to help him up, but he waved it away. “Thanks,” He said, “But I can do this.”
“Are you sure,” Asked the young woman, as she stepped back. “That attack hit you pretty hard.”
Ranma nodded. ”Yeah, I’m fine.” With a grunt, the young martial artist got to his feet and looked at his companion.
His eyes met a slim young woman a year or so older than him. Her green-tinted blond hair was done up in a ponytail, and her outfit consisted of a red bustier, red sleeves, stockings, and red boots with gold trim. Around her waist was a mostly pink and purple sash, and draped over her back was a matching cape. Stuck into her sash was a European-looking sword.
She was quite beautiful, much better looking a certain tomboy who had wished him out of her life. The thought of Akane brought a frown to his face.
Terra noticed his dark expression. “Is something wrong?” She asked.
Ranma shook his head free of those thoughts. “Er, no,” he said, “It’s nothing. I was just thinking.” He took a breath. “Anyway, what was that you said about an attack?”
She raised an eyebrow, before she comprehended his meaning. “Oh, yes. My friend Setzer has an ability, called Slots, that allows him to do several different things, depending on his luck.” She paused to indicate the vast, but slowly decaying savanna.
“This place is called the Veldt,” She said, “It is an area where monsters migrate to on a regular basis. Setzer and I are part of a group of adventurers/ freedom fighters. We and one other, a guy named Sabin, had come here to look for another friend of ours, named Gau when we were ambushed by those Malboros.” She pointed to pile of rather ugly-looking plant creatures a few yards away.
“We’d weakened them considerably, and Setzer had used Slots to call a herd of Chocobos, when suddenly…”
“I appeared,” finished Ranma.
Terra nodded, and was about too continue, when a smooth, cultured voice spoke up. “Yes. You and your companion gave us quite a surprise.”
The two looked over as a man in a black overcoat approached them. His clothing denoted him as being upper-class, while the scarred face gave him the appearance of an elegant warrior. His most striking feature was his silver hair, which was surprising since he looked no older than thirty.
“Hello, Setzer,” Said Terra.
“Setzer,” Said Ranma, quirking an eyebrow, “So, you’re the guy who ran me over with those birds, eh?”
The silver-haired man blushed, and then coughed into his hand. “Er, yes.” The man made a sweeping bow. “I am Setzer Gabbiani, The Wandering Gambler, at your service.” He straightened up. “I must apologize for the accident. By the time we realized what was going to happen, it was too late to do anything about it.”
“It’s okay.” Said Ranma, “I’ve been through worse.”
“No,” Said Terra, “We have to do something to make it up to you, Mr… Er…”
“My name is Ranma. Ranma Saotome,” He scratched the back of his head, “Sorry ‘bout this.”
