"Thanks," Misato told her as she took the drink, "I've been thinking about getting some for a bit now."
"No problem. I do it all the time for the doctor, so I'm sort of used to it."
"She makes you get her things?"
"Not really. She just sort of asks and I get them. It's only a little cost to get to study with someone as brillant as her."
"If you say so," the major said with a shrug, "I've never been into that sort of stuff."
Maya sat on her seat, and looked at the other woman. "But you work here..."
"That technical stuff is your and Ritsuko... Doctor Akagi's department. My field's more about tactics and worrying about those in my care."
"Like Shinji."
'Definately him,' Misato thought to herself, but didn't say it. "Him, and the other pilots. Along with all the other people I have to deal with."
"You must be very concerned about it."
"Why would you assume that? It's true of course, but..."
"Well, you are waiting for Shinji."
"I was out shopping with him when I got the call, and we are supposed to go to lunch afterwards. Besides, I just can't let him have to walk home."
"Oh... But you could always go out and do things while he's being examined."
"Then how would I know when he was done. And I wouldn't want to leave him alone if I didn't have to."
"You could have someone call you when it's time," the bridge operator told her, "And I'm sure that there would be plenty of people who wouldn't mind staying with him until you got there."
"Like who?" the lavender haired woman asked, trying to sound idly interested.
"Hmm... plenty of the women around here would do it. I would do it without much concern."
"You would, would you?"
A smile crossed the younger woman's face. "Of course. I haven't been around him as much as you have, but he's a sweet guy. Always extremely polite, and doesn't act like a jerk like a lot of guys. He's been through a lot, but he doesn't complain, and he treats everyone so kindly."
"That's Shinji."
"Yes, and it doesn't seem bad to spend time with him. In fact, it might be nice."
"I see... But I still want to be there for him. He might not need me, but I really think that it's only right that I don't ditch him. I simply couldn't do that to Shinji. After all he's been through, he needs to know that someone cares about him."
'She seems very concerned about being the one there for him. Almost as if she's.., But is that what's happening?' Maya thought. "I'm sure that a lot of people care about him. He is a sweet guy after all."
"That's for sure," Misato verbally agreed. 'Ibuki sounds all soft about Shinji, and almost... It couldn't be.., could it?'
Both women smiled at each other and sipped their drinks, but the jovial expressions were not completely in their eyes. Each of their minds were whirling with possibilities, and neither were coming up with much.
But the same thought was on both their minds.
'I hope that I'm not jumping to conclusions...'
And so they sat there in silence for a few moments, while:
