Other than a cough, runny nose, and the occasional sneeze - Akane went on with business as usual for the first six hours. She went to bed early that night, feeling "under the weather" and oddly distracted.
The day after the field trip had been a bad one for the males of the Tendo household. Kasumi normally handled all the chores, and in fact took them as her own personal territory upon which intruders were not entirely welcome. Having to play nurse to the three sisters made Ranma a bit cross, but the two fathers had come up with this weird idea about him getting closer to Akane as he nursed her to health - and therefore that is what they'd insisted he do.
During that time, the virus had set up its positions and secured locations within the infected bodies. Internal changes were readied.
About halfway through that day, atypical of a flu bug, the victims awoke and while weak and shaky were also starving! Ranma and the others not apparently infected had taken this as a good sign and that the "bug" was weakening.
Of course, that was not what had been occurring. Additional materials were taken in to fuel the big push which happened late the second day after infection. The bulk of the physical transformation occurred and then slowed itself. When completed, the transformee was now one of the faer folk. Some of the other changes would take place over the next several days as the process slowly completed itself.
Whether Akane would stay at 1.4 meters height, or if she would continue to shrink, remained to be seen.
The virus spread itself along, communicable three hours after infection. Akane's classmates spread it until they succumbed, the other students from other schools would bring it with them the next day, their families spread it at groceries and workplaces, business travellers and vacationing students took the flu overseas.
Of course, the flu's spread was noted by this point and international organizations moved to curtail it. They didn't know what it was, other than some debilitating flu strain, but just the speed with which it struck was concerning to those who monitored such things.
By the time Akane and her sisters were awake and able to notice the changes, it had spread far beyond Nerima.
