Saturn, supported largely by Ranma, freely wept - naming off those whose coffins had failed during their long hybernation.
Here was the dusty bones of Alphane, a fierce warrior who had loved life and had never taken anything in half-measure.
Here the dessicated corpse of Latisse, a felinoid who had always been ready with a kind word and gentle strength - even when her kingdom lay in ruins.
Over here was the one who had found the dust on her coffin had sealed it so that the emergency release had not functioned and had clawed at the inside of the container. A soldier named Amber who had been a pillar of strength in the kingdom's last days.
In amongst the names and identities came the story she was telling, of a great evil threatening life and destroying ancient kingdoms - then the evil was contained but would return from where it had hidden itself but this plan to await the coming of it again and defeat it once and for all.
Ranma began staring and felt an unaccustomed feeling tightening his chest. Yes, these were dead bodies who had been that way mostly before he was born. Yes, he hadn't known them. With Saturn recounting their words and deeds, he felt almost as though he did know them - that all of these had been people. Heroes who had put their lives on the line and triumphed in battles, only to lose finally against some dust and the march of time.
It was a hell of a thing, and something he'd never considered before, this idea of his own mortality. As Saturn spoke of Lachien and his indomitable need to become one with his fighting art, and Ranma looked in on a body that had surely only died a scant few years ago, he thought about life and death struggles and his own life from a new perspective.
