Truth can be stranger than fiction...
20,000 years ago was a time of great peril. There was a full-blown war between humans and vampires in progress. The vampires' ability to infect humans had been giving them an advantage... Iceron wished to create a race that could fight the vampires without fear of danger by magic, and wich were immune to vampiric infection. From these desires came the lycanthropes. But they were flawed. Instead being highly resistant to magic, they were very vulnerable to it. And they were not immune to vampiric infection. Iceron tried many methods of fixing this problem. None were successful. He kept several weres as test subjects while most went to the battlefields despite their weaknesses - human losses were so high they needed as many fighters as possible. While the wolves and various cats were content to be experimented on for the sake of humanity, the rats grew angry and hateful. Eventually rebelling and killing Iceron.
Just before his death, thoguh, Iceron had succeeded in his wishes. He had used another type of animal to create a were nearly immune to offensive magics, immune to vampiric infection, and more than capable of destroying all undead...
This were DID live on to have children. And in modern times, only one descendant is still alive, and physically able to survive the stress of awakening wereblood.
