Milly had really hoped that the Professor's plan would work. She had hoped that this would be able to help finally rescue humanity from the end that was so close in coming. She had believed in it, and it seemed that it was going to work. The scientists needed only a little bit more time, and they'd be able to finish the project.
But the aliens refused to give them that time.
Just as the final stages were being reached, one of their ships had penetrated their defenses, and a squad of troops were destroying the guards with sickening ease.
Realising that there was no one else, she grabbed the unit that the person chosen for the mission had been given and ran for the machine, hoping that she would be able to make it. She wasn't the best, but she knew that this was humanity's only chance. Up the stairs she ran, dodging blasts as she went.
As she reached the top, she turned to look, and saw a series of shots and remote piloted attack drones coming at her.
Her choice was made.
Turning back, she leapt off of the platform.
And into infinity.
Present Day, October 20
After a ride that had both seemed endless, and driven, Milly found herself dropping onto metal decking. She picked herself up and looked around, realising that she was on some sort of ship. There had been times when she was on such things before, but they usually weren't in such good condition.
That gave her hope, and she scurried over to the railing to see what was out there.
In the distance, instead of the burned out hulks she had grown up with, a city gleamed in the distance, its towers lighting up the night.
Excitement burbled inside of her, and she knew that the Professor's machine had worked. Her main problem now was to figure out where and when she was, in order to complete her mission.
But the sounds of fighting caught her ear, and she crept over to see what was going on.
