Spirits Walk the Earth: Umm ... Say What? [Episode 91808]

Every 23 years, for 23 days, those spirits which are trapped between realities may pass on to their reward. Those which have lived lives virtuous enough to pass on to one of the better afterlives go willingly, gladly even.

Those who believe in the cycle of reincarnation go on to their next life, perhaps further along the path to Enlightenment from their ordeal.

Those who have unfinished business, or those who are (rightfully or not) wary of what awaits them ... well, let's just say that they 'do not go gentle into that good night'.

In time, they can accumulate quite a bit of power, some even enough to be able to affect the living world. Insanity and monomania can help in this regard. Their effects on the world of the living are, for the most part, not positive.

For this reason, Devil Hunters exist, as do various other types of supernatural bounty hunters. Most of the spirits they encounter are not demons or devils, per se, merely misplaced souls.

Some souls, however, bide their time in secret. They accumulate power, as a dragon gathers and hoards gold, until even the most powerful of Devil Hunters becomes unable to defeat them. To banish these souls to their Eternal Reward, certain objects have been created and passed down through the generations. The possession of these objects carries with it the responsibility to seek out and banish such spirits, yet also carries with it rewards undreamt of.
