Starting Over...: Yet Another Reason Why Hackers Shouldn't Have Real Power (DARK) [Episode 91813]

by Duraiken

The scene fades in with a smash on a small room and a ratty looking young man as he strolls dejectedly inward, a large backpack over his side. A deep feeling of depression and hopelessness is rolling off of him, a hatred for the outside world steadily growing stronger within his heart with every passing moment.

His name right now is not important. He is the type of person that fades into the background, the kind of guy that always seems to have a chip on his shoulder but never does anything about it. Every insult, every humiliation and embarrassment, all of it piling up until he is either ready to explode or implode.

He sets himself down heavily in a nearly worn-out chair, a battered desk directly in front of him. He takes the pack off and places it to the side, removing a sleek, expensive-looking laptop computer, and sets it on the scarred surface of the desk. He begins hooking up various cables and wires, plugging this here and that there. When he is finished, he turns the laptop on, waiting for the OS to load.

A "ping" sound comes from the machine sometime later, and the screen clears as the computer passes out of it starting sequence. The man immediately begins typing on the keyboard of the small computer, his fingers going a mile a minute, blazing so fast that an observer would only be able to see a blur. Finally, a strange image appears on the computer screen, an image of the Earth, population centers clearly marked all over it. Suddenly, the image changes, the population centers changing or splitting or disappearing entirely.

Outside, dark clouds gather overhead, as if a storm is gathering, yet no rain is forthcoming, though ominous thunder sounds in the distance. Shadows move along the ground, glowing eyes flash in various alleys, but otherwise the streets are empty, silence reigning save the portentous rumbling. Something massive is occurring, but no cause can be attributed to this scene. Or can it...

Back with our severely disturbed comrade, the room is now empty. The man is no longer present. The laptop is still on, the image still changing. Text can be seen scrolling across the bottom of the screen. It reads:

No one ever appreciated me before, never remembered me, never cared. Now they'll feel what I have felt, know what I know, Be what I have become. They will all pay.
