Just a little training trip. That's all it had been. Just a little trip.
Cologne had sensed... something. Dark and nasty. She'd come to the Tendo dojo, wanted to get him involved. Had even promised him a new technique if he'd just put aside all the objections. Akane had listened to the two fathers and had come to the conclusion this was just another stupid plot from Shampoo.
Ranma wondered if Akane would change her mind if she could see this. Probably. Though he'd never really understood women even with the Jusenkyo curse.
Here he had fought alongside Ryoga and some girls in silly costumes. Here he had fought some nut called "Wiseass" or something and these guys named after gemstones and some weird bimbo they'd resurrected named Beryl.
It had been one hell of a fight and something else besides. Him and Ryoga both had seen these sailor gals link up. He hadn't known what or how they were combining, but apparently Cologne had some chi technique that did something similar and then she was showing them how to do it.
Rubble shifted from down in the crater. Ranma groaned something resembling a hello as Ryoga unburied himself. Ryoga groaned back something that might have been a reply.
They'd linked together, and for a brief moment at the end of the battle, he'd felt the girls dying around him and how absolutely pathetic his life had been in comparison to theirs. They had had hopes and dreams and friends and lives beyond the martial arts, and he'd glimpsed briefly into their very souls as the linkages had been broken one link at a time.
Ryoga croaked out something before collapsing, exhausted, about halfway up the crater.
"Ranma," said a tired and familiar voice.
"Y' don't look so good, old ghoul," said Ranma. Not son in law? That could be bad. Of course, Shampoo being gone probably explained it.
"Look who's talking," said Cologne as she used her staff to steady herself. "Not that I would be terribly averse to sleeping a week or two at this point."
"...does have a nice sound to it," agreed Ranma.
"I'll help, where I can," said Cologne.
"Huh?" Ranma asked, wondering what the old ghoul meant. Had she hit her head or something?
"Shampoo's gone, she went in the manner of a true Amazon. While I may have had my reservations about my great-granddaughter's qualifications for following in my footsteps, she acquitted herself well." Cologne stopped in order to give a painful sounding coughing jag.
Ranma thought back, everyone attacking in unison, and there was Shampoo. Glowing like a star as she charged forward, having taken the Space Sword from the injured Uranus to behead Beryl only to be caught in the explosion as the headless abomination grabbed her up in a bear hug. After inserting the Space Sword into the body and apparently getting it stuck there, Shampoo had drawn a pair of daggers from somewhere and repeatedly plunged them into her opponent as the black flames around them turned green.
The fight had taken them all. As far as Ranma could tell, it was only him, Ryoga, and Cologne who had survived.
"Those magical warriors, Ranma. I'd adopt them except that they are Japanese and I got the distinct impression that there was some bond with you when we all linked." Cologne closed her eyes. "Besides. I don't think I did that well as a surrogate mother the last time around."
"What ya talking about?" Ranma asked, wondering if Cologne had cracked under the strain.
Cologne used her staff to point. "They're your responsibility at this point Ranma, greet your new daughters, reborn through magic."
"Huh?" Ranma asked, panic putting some strength back in his limbs. Sure enough there were a bunch of kids.
