* It didn’t work *
That was Shimori Kazuki’s first thought when he saw Miyama Yuuna, the pink haired girl who had always loved him, started coughing and hacking again. The super magical virus, which was draining her life force, came back with a vengeance after he used the last safe attempt at magic at his command to cleanse the virus from her. One more attempt would do it. The cost would be Kazuki turning to ashes, the sacrificing of his life force. The counter measuring Yuuna’s life force restarted counting downward. when it reaches zero, Yuuna will die.

Kazuki stared at and clenched the heart pendant he was holding. The cost was worth it…Yuuna had done so much for him that there was really no choice at all. Kazuki touched Yuuna’s shoulder, threw his head back and closed his eyes. He invoked the magic of the final attempt. A blue nimbus sprang around him.
7….
Don’t!!….
Kazuki!
Shikimori!
Kazuki dimly heard the girls who had come into his life cry out as the magic flowed from him into Yuuna. He opened his eyes and saw that the virus was finally gone..that Yuuna will live. He looked into Yuuna’s horrified face as he felt himself burning away. His last remembrance was his double promise to Yuuna…not use magic no matter what happened to her and his childhood promise that when they grow up she would be his bride. His last words to her as his vision whitened was:
“I’m sorry for not keeping my promise”
The last thing he saw and heard was Yuuna’s eyes watering and her face breaking into an explosion of sorrow and pain as she screamed out an anguished cry.
Kazuki-san !?
NOOOOOOOO!
His last thought was:
* I wish…. *

It was dawn when Yuuna woke up after collapsing. She was clutching tightly to her chest the locket that she had given to Kazuki when they first met again since childhood. The only physical proof that Kazuki was ever there. She heard voices talking softly.
“She’s still a little weak. But her magic is steadily improving”
* Akai-sensei*, Yuuna thought, identifying Aoi Magic Academy’s physician and her father’s former pupil.
“Then you mean…”
* Rin-san *
Kamishiro Rin. A high school freshman, blue-haired samurai-ko and one of her friends/rivals to Kazuki-san’s genes. A person who habitually wears a hakama.
“She’ll be fine”
A new voice entered the conversation
“For a while there I was worried”
* Kuriko-san *
Katsetsubaki Kuriko. High school senior and heiress to the Katsetsubaki fortune. Blond and buxom. The final girl who laid claim to Kazuki.
“Everything is all right now.”
Yuuna decided to speak up, stung to the core by that remark.
“It’s NOT all right. He left me behind ….Kazuki-san….Kazuki-san...It would had been better if if I had been the one turned to ashes!…if I had.”
Yuuna stopped talking as tears leaked from her closed eyes and her shoulders shook from her renewed weeping. The crying stopped as she heard another voice…
“If you had Yuuna, then I’d be upset!”
“Kazuki-san’s voice?”, spoke Yuuna in tones of wonder.
“If you want me, I’m right here”
“Really? But Kazuki-san just….”, Yuuna spoke in tones of disbelief.
Akai-sensei spoke again.
“Skikimori-kun had more power than I expected”
“You mean Kazuki-san..but it’s no good. I’m scared to open my eyes! If I open my eyes and Kazuki-san isn’t there I-“
Yuuna broke off, hope and fear warring within her. A gentle voice spoke to her.
“It’s alright, Yuuna. I’m right here.”
“Kazuki-san?”
Yuuna slowly and carefully opened her eyes. Her eyes were still dimmed by her tears so the first thing she saw was a dim outline looking down at her. The outline spoke with a smile.
“Yuuna”, the outline spoke in Kazuki’s voice
“It really is true!!” Kazuki-san!!”, cried Yuuna as she grabbed her arms around the dim figure. It was then she felt something was wrong. Her eyes widened and she gasped…
“What the??…”
Akai-sensei explained to her the situation.
His body burned away but..”
