Sword and Sorcery: One dodge ahead of the fireball, one duck ahead of the sword [Episode 92755]

by Kestral

The treasure vault contained a number of things of gold and silver and precious metals and gems. Tithes to the church were more often consisting of pigs, ducks, chickens, and the like - because the average peasant had little or no coin to use. Barter was more common.

Which was okay for the most part. The priestesses didn't starve and a number of them had skills which were useful in dealing with the oddiments sent their way.

Some of the craftsmen were used to giving items of their manufacture. Old Silas the Potter, for example. When he was selling his wares he made lots of plain pots and dishes and the like. When he was crafting something to give to the church, he got to indulge his creative side a bit more. Not that the vases he made with that crackle-glaze didn't work perfectly well, but they were fancier than anything he could sell locally.

So there were things in the treasure vault that were not, strictly speaking, treasure. Old Silas' vases were fanciful designs but he wanted to be an artist but didn't have that much talent to do it with. In a larger city they would have been snubbed by the gentry. The same was true of Earl's donations of carved wooden boxes or the bundles of herbs from Kirie's farm or the scented soaps that Widow Brown made.

There were also estate items, heirlooms and jewelry given to the church when someone passed away.

"FIREBALL!" shouted the priestess, forming the ball between her hands and throwing it.

Ranma dodged, spun, and leapt.

Fwoom!

Rei saw the tapestries donated by one of the local weavers catch fire and said something that would have had the older priestesses scurrying for their rulers to whack her knuckles for.

"I didn't know priestesses knew language like that."

Rei turned and performed the spell again. "FIREBALL!"

Ranma leapt, dodged, spun.

"EEEK!" said Rei as she saw the blast hit a cabinet in the back. A cabinet she'd been told never ever ever to open. A cabinet festooned with spirit wards and seals. A cabinet that most of the older priestesses refused even to acknowledge its presence. A cabinet that had been accumulating rumors and stories about.

Fwoom! went the spirit wards and seals holding the cabinet closed.

creeeakkkkkkkkk went the cabinet as the door slowly opened.
