Akane looked in concern at her friend.
Yuka flexed her new arm and compared the two. "Do I have to keep it out of water or something?"
"Nothing like that," assured the machine. It was a couple of large metal cylinders ringed by a set of mechanical arms, and it was the ship's doctor. A Cyberdoc, appropriately enough. MDO-418 was a specialist in its field. "I may be working under primitive conditions, but anything less than a perfect fit wouldn't be appropriate here."
Sayuri stared. One of Yuka's arms was clearly human. Something that she'd expected to see on a Japanese girl. The other wasn't blocky or typical robot, but looked more like a metal sculpture of her arm. It was smooth and sleek and had a sort of dull-silver finish.
MDO-418 made a set of tones. "I suggest you get used to this new prosthetic before you suggest any additions. It's just a basic replacement limb without any weapons systems, though those can be added at a later date."
"Does it have a jack?" Yuka asked, looking for the seams she'd expect one to have.
"Uses a wireless connect, though inserting your pinky into an interface jack will cause contacts to extend," said MDO-418. "Now if you don't mind, I have work to do."
Akane and Sayuri found themselves staring at Yuka's arm as they crossed from the clinic to the interior bay lookout.
Yuka noticed and felt a little self-conscious. "Hey. I'm up here."
"Sorry," said Akane. "So that'll let you do what?"
"We have to have jobs until we can find a way back, Akane," said Yuka. "This was part of my contract. Any injuries I get will be repaired or replaced within the capabilities of their available resources. I can pilot one of the Crabs and scavenge."
The Crabs were something like a helicopter cockpit that led to a blocky body and a set of metal arms underneath. The single armament was overhead and meant only to be used in self defense. Crabs weren't a combat vehicle but a materials scavenger. Yuka had seen one and immediately felt that this at least was something she could do.
"We've got to come up with something," agreed Akane, Sayuri nodding a moment later.
"Well, at least you can go with power armor, Akane." Sayuri pointed to a set that had already been painted red for the new owner, if Akane accepted the job offer. "Martial arts gives you the reflexes and moves to be able to use that thing. Yuka is going to pilot a one of the scavenger vehicles. What do you think that leaves me?"
"Whole," said Yuka, flexing her synthetic arm. "Food service or manning one of the turret guns or doing something similar. Out of the line of fire for the most part."
"It took considerable effort to break him, but I think we'll have major results today," said Steven Prost of the Interrogation Squad. "He's obviously a d-bee of considerable talent."
"Chemical and physical persuasion have produced some mad ranting but no useful information. Psionic interrogation is another method," said Lieutenant Liedmeyer. "I know you traditional types prefer your chemicals and removing teeth and other body parts, but esper talents get results."
"Geb fuj," said the bruised and bloody figure on the chair.
"No, monster," said Liedmeyer, placing his hand on the girl's forehead and beginning his esper probe. "Hmmm. Wasn't raping her a bit much?"
"It proves useful in interrogating female prisoners," pointed out Sergeant Prost.
"Hmmm. Definitely a male psyche though, or what's left of it," said Liedmeyer. "What's this? Some sort of buried second personality?"
"Since we were unable to get details of the operations against the Coalition," said the more interested Sergeant Prost, "it's possible that they used this second personality as their operative."
"I've heard of the New German Republic doing something like that," admitted Liedmeyer. "Here we go. Let's see what our prisoner has to say now."
Ranma's head slowly lifted, her remaining eye focussing on the two around her restrained body. "Meow."
