Rui was enjoying her return to the Orange Islands after her experience in the Orre regions. She had even managed to get Wes to come along and leave his cycle with her grandparents. She saw a trio of kids having an argument. One was a girl a bit younger than she was. The two boys were of differing ages. The younger boy looked to be about the girl's age and the other boy closer to Rui's.
"Ash," the girl said. "You know Charizard won't obey you. You should just send him to Professor Oak's and get a different Pokemon. Your Kingler would be a better addition."
The young boy looked at the Pokeball he was holding and replied. "Misty, I'm not giving up on Charizard. I'm sure if I keep working with him, he'll eventually come around. Tracey, what about you?"
"I have to agree with Misty. That Charizard won't obey you. You should send it back to Professor Oak's," the older boy, obviously Tracey said.
Rui shook her head, as she saw Ash tightly clench the Pokeball he was holding, and thought, "I have to give him credit for trying."
Wes walked up and handed Rui her drink from the concession stand. He looked at the argument and blinked.
"What's going on?" Wes asked.
"That young boy, Ash, has a Charizard that won't obey him. He probably got it in trade and he's having a real hard time with it. The other two are trying to convince him to trade it for one of his other Pokemon," Rui replied.
"I'm going to try," Ash said. "Charizard, I choose you!"
The dragon Pokemon appeared and glared at Ash. Rui started choking on her drink, as she stared at the Charizard.
"Rui? What's wrong?" Wes asked.
"That Charizard. Wes, get that stone tablet out. Ash is going to need to use its power," Rui sputtered.
Wes pulled out a small stone tablet with glowing green runes etched on it. "Shadow Pokemon."
Rui nodded. "Don't go after it. Ash is trying and it just might need a Relic Stone's power to finish the job."
Wes nodded, as he stood up and headed towards Ash and Charizard. Ash tried calling Charizard, but it just lay down and blew smoke at Ash.
"Charizard, why won't you obey me?" Ash plaintively demanded.
"Maybe because its heart is closed," Wes said, as his stared down at the disobedient Pokemon.
"Huh?" Ash replied, a bit shocked and confused. "What do you mean by that?"
"Certain Pokemon, if they have been mistreated or due to circumstances that have affected them, will close their hearts and do what they want," Wes replied.
"So when Charizard was abandoned by Damien when it was a Charmander, it affected how it would act later?" Misty asked.
"Abandoned? Explain how you got this Pokemon," Wes stated.
Ash nodded and explained how he, Misty, and a person by the name of Brock found a Charmander that was abandoned on a stump and how close it came to dying. While the story was going on, Rui had walked up and shook her head. Ash went on to explain the later trials he had with the Pokemon after he evolved into Charmeleon and then later Charizard.
"You've been very lucky so far with your Charizard," Rui said. "I think it's time to finish the healing process."
Charizard turned over and pretended to ignore the five humans. Wes's left hand clenched and unclenched, as he looked at Charizard. Rui lightly punched him in the arm.
"Don't even think about it. This Pokemon doesn't qualify. If it was still with Damien, then yes it would have," Rui said with a smile.
"Qualify? For what?" Tracey asked.
"Nothing important right now," Rui replied, and pointed to a stone shrine on the island. "Charizard can be healed there."
"That shrine?" Ash asked. "How can that shrine help Charizard?"
Wes held up the stone tablet that he was holding, showing off its glowing runes. "This tablet when combined with a Relic Stone is able to finish the healing process."
"Where did you get that?" Misty asked.
"My grandfather gave it to him. This is the one that goes to the Relic Stone in Agate Village," Rui replied with a grin. "With the heavy use that stone has seen recently, the tablet is no longer needed there."
"Heavy use? How can a tone like that be used heavily?" Ash asked.
Rui's smile fell, as Wes bluntly stated, "Cipher."
"Cipher?" Tracey asked. "What's that?"
"It's what Team Rocket wants to be," Wes replied. "Ash, let's get your Charizard healed."
Before the group could head over to the shrine a female voice stopped them.
"Hold it! Where did you think you're going?" Officer Jenny called out.
Wes rolled his eyes upwards. "Oh, a female version of Officer Johnson."
Officer Jenny saw the stone in Wes's hand and blinked. "That looks like the stone in the museum. How did you get it?"
"I received it from Rui's grandfather in Agate Village in the Orre region," Wes said.
"Orre region? I have never heard of the Orre region," Ash said.
"It's a very tough region, Ash. It has no wild Pokemon and the land is very harsh on everyone living in it," Tracey said. "Which probably explains why he has that stone."
Wes shrugged, as Jenny grabbed his wrist.
"The five of you are coming with me to see Professor Krane," Officer Jenny said.
"But, my Charizard..." Ash objected.
"Put it back in its Pokeball and let's get this over with," Wes said with amusement.
Ash reluctantly did so and Officer Jenny hauled the group off to a Pokemon museum. Officer Jenny marched the group into a cluttered lab inside the museum. A young man wearing glasses was busy pouring over notes and books. Apparently he was Professor Krane
"Professor Krane, these kids have your stone," Jenny said.
Professor Krane looked up and held up a small stone. "They couldn't. I found it in a folder."
Officer Jenny looked between Wes and Professor Krane and smiled. "I'm sorry about that, but I had to make sure that you hadn't stolen your stone from the museum."
Krane looked at Wes and saw the stone in his hand. "Your stone is glowing."
"I've been using it," Wes replied.
"Using it? How?" Krane asked.
"Ash explain how you got that Charizard" Wes said.
Ash grimaced but did so for Professor Krane. Officer Jenny bit her lower lip, while Krane nodded.
"I can see dark clouds around Charizard, due to its heart being closed. Apparently I have psychic abilities and my first to manifest was the ability to see auras," Rui said.
"We were going to use that Relic Stone in your park and my tablet to purify Ash's Charizard, but since we have access to the tablet that goes with this Relic Stone, it would probably be better to use it instead," Wes stated.
Krane stood up, as he grabbed a notebook. "All right, let's go."
"Professor Krane, the tablet shouldn't leave the museum," Officer Jenny said.
"If the tablet goes with that stone shrine, then it should be with it instead," Krane replied, waving Jenny's objections away.
The now larger group made its way back to the shrine or Relic Stone and Krane looked at Wes.
"Hand Ash the tablet. Ash, release Charizard," Wes instructed.
Ash took the tablet from Professor Krane and pulled out a Pokeball.
As Charizard came out, Wes glared at it. "Don't even think it."
Something in the yellow eyes of Wes caused Charizard to back down.
"All right Ash, place your left hand on the Relic Stone and then gently touch Charizard with the tablet."
As Ash did so, all but Wes and Rui were taken by surprise by what happened. Five small comets of green light spun around Charizard faster and faster. The five comets struck Charizard and small clouds of black and purple were blasted free of the fire Pokemon. The clouds quickly dissipated in the air.
"Wha? Wha? What was that?" Ash numbly asked.
Wes took the tablet from Ash's nerveless fingers and held it out to Professor Krane. "Now your stone is glowing. It's not as bright as mine is, but now you know how to use it. If this Relic Stone gets as heavily used as the one in Agate Village was, you won't even need the tablet."
Ash looked at Charizard hopefully. "Charizard, do you remember?"
The dragon nodded its head and Ash jumped up and quickly hugged Charizard's neck.
"Charizard, I'm so happy you remembered," Ash declared.
"That ended happily," Rui said, with a tear in her eye.
Krane looked at the tablet and nodded. "At least this part of my reseacrh is done. I wonder what I'm to do now."
