“So what was this about the money?” asked Nabiki, when her and Cologne had stepped outside.
The older woman was sitting down, drinking some tea Kasumi had brought her, and resting, her body still sore from the battle. “I have sent word to the Amazon Council.”
“That could take weeks,” muttered Nabiki.
“Only if the e-mail server is compromised or the satellite linkup is on the fritz again,” answered Cologne. “Damn Soviet crap, never did work right. Say what you will, but at least now the Russians can make a decent satellite.”
Seeing Nabiki’s shocked stare, Cologne cackled. “What, did you just assume we were always some backwards village that wouldn’t know the difference between a mountain ram and a computer’s RAM?”
Nabiki sighed as she sat down beside Cologne. “I don’t know why this is surprising.”
Cologne nodded. “We’d have a better bandwidth issue if it wasn’t for Elder Crystal downloading all that yaoi. I swear she’s as big a pervert as Happi ever was.”
Nabiki tried not to shudder at such an image. “And they’ll assist us.”
“Indeed,” said Cologne. “The Sailor Senshi in of themselves represent many ideals that the Amazons strive for, aside from outfits even Shampoo wouldn’t have been caught dead in.”
“Speaking of, why isn’t her father going to raise her? I thought he was working at the Nekohanten?”
“He isn’t abandoning her,” said Cologne. “But my grandson does know the ways of the world, and with things the way they are now, he knows she’ll be safer here than with him where she might get deported if the Chinese begin to get ... jumpy.”
“I see,” said Nabiki, understanding the reasoning. If something did happen, then Shampoo couldn’t be deported as a ward of Ranma’s. “What about the family of the others?”
“Now in that, I am uncertain. Pluto was not very forthcoming on the possible ends of the battle when she asked for our help,” she replied. “I told you earlier I sensed something off because I doubted very much that any of you would have believed me if I said magic girls had requested our help.”
“We would have thought it was either a ploy to get him for Shampoo or a trap by some magic girls Uncle Saotome cheated.”
Cologne nodded. “Anyway, since all the girls only remember their first names when I talked to them before Ranma woke up, it’ll be a bit harder to track down their real families. And that’s assuming their families remember them. This sort of magical backlash has a tendency to mess with the timeline a bit; especially with how Ranma helped them. Until I can get a better grasp of who they may have been, I won’t be able to tell you how or even if they have a family anymore.”
“I see,” said Nabiki. “And even if they do, you can’t exactly tell them the truth, can you?”
“No child,” said Cologne. “If I did, it would somehow get out, and we all know how smart and yet so stupid people can be. Imagine if someone was able to jump to the right conclusion about why the girls are all younger, and whatever happened to the Senshi. And even you wouldn’t sell out a baby at your worst.”
Nabiki sighed; children, her one weakness aside from her sisters.
“Excuse me?”
Nabiki turned around, seeing the girl with the dark purple hair. “Yes?”
“I gotta go potty.”
Cologne chuckled a bit. “Welcome to motherhood.”
Rubbing her temples a bit, Nabiki stood up and took the little girl’s hand. “What’s your name?”
“I’m Hotaru,” said the little girl.
“Okay then, Hotaru,” said Nabiki. “Let’s go to the bathroom.”
