Yes, this particular cursed spring had been sealed because of the reputation of the Art the victim practiced. Hokuto Shin Ken, the Great Bear divine fist, a horrible kung-fu from Ancient China that destroyed its victims from the inside out by targeting secret pressure points, a dreaded fighting technique with only killing moves. This particular school was believed to have been destroyed long ago and many thought it was a good thing.
Actually, it wasn't totally true. The drowned martial artist in question had created his own variant of the Art. He called it the Hokuto Ujyo Ken, the Great bear compassionate fist. Using the pressure points knowledge of Hokuto Shin Ken and classical medicine, the Assassin's Art became an Art for healing. But make no mistake, it could kill as well as heal.
Ranma Saotome had unknowingly received Toki's legacy. He checked his new body : taller, rippling muscles, ki reserves comparable to a nuclear reactor, unbelievable speed, strength and toughness, a wise and mature look...
"Incredible ! I've been transmogrified !" Ranma smiled "I'm much better than before too ! What do you think, Hobbes ? Hobbes ?"

A few minutes later, Ranma had finished assimilating the Hokuto Ujyo Ken and made its ideals his, the Anything Goes creed discarded as dishonorable and corrupted. Toki's memories and experience had made Ranma see his life in a new light, letting him realize what he had been doing during his training trip.
Thievery, profanation of sacred grounds, being sold as a slave or payment for food, provoking others for petty reasons, the list went on and on...
