Setsuna's Fault/Hotaru's Sensei: Sometimes Love and Justice just aren't enough... [Episode 99455]

by Tarquin

The scene that greeted Pluto was almost a frozen tableaux, though it wasn't from anything she'd done. The Senshi stood in a loose cluster, watching Ranma expectantly. Sailor Moon still had her sceptre raised as though she'd just thrown an attack - though she hadn't been aiming to cause damage this time so much as to heal it. Ranma was still in his wheelchair, his posture suggesting that he wasn't sure what he was supposed to do next.

Eventually, Usagi's curiosity broke the moment. "Well?", she asked hopefully. "Aren't you going to get up and walk?"

Ranma's reply began in an irritated tone, with a gesture at his useless legs. "I can't walk - you know that..." His voice softened somewhat, though, as he realised what she'd been hoping to hear. "I'm sorry if you thought you could help me, but..."

Sailor Moon, looking stunned that her powers hadn't done anything, cut him off. "I can help you! I know I can! MOON HEALING ESCALATION!" She poured all her strength into the wave of magic, and when she finished, visibly drained, she looked up at Ranma in a silent plea.

"It's all right," Ranma explained, "I'm used to being like this. Thanks anyway - it was worth a try, I suppose."

"You've never actually used your powers to heal injuries before," Mercury added gently, moving over to console her friend. "Perhaps they just don't work that way."

"But they have to!" Moon burst out, almost sobbing. "Ranma's a good person, and he was going to help us, and he's Hotaru's friend, so they have to work! They just have to!"

Setsuna winced as another of the pillars of her Crystal Tokyo - Usagi's unwavering belief that a pure heart and a determined will could heal all the pain in the world - cracked. Without that belief, she might not have the strength to purify the hearts of everyone who lived there. Without that belief, she might not have the courage to banish those who might disagree with her off to Nemesis. Pluto could feel her pure and perfect future slipping through her fingers, and she didn't know what to do to salvage it.

What she didn't realise, and which would put her future in even greater jeopardy, was that:
