"I cannot break the spell," Beryl said, her voice gone quiet for a moment.

Does she mean to kill me, then? Is this whole talk just her way of apologizing, explaining it?

Beryl sighed deeply, "To be fair, the Queen truly believed that what she was doing was needful. She was a tyrant, and allowed a great deal of evil to be done in her name, but there was nothing of power lust in it. Her great fault was that she confused goodness with order, and in her devotion to good... well, we've been over that." She stood slowly, "There is no way to break the spell, Ami - Mercury. It will soon come to pass. But there is, perhaps, a way to mitigate its effects: My generals and I can perhaps force your powers to awake before your memories. Since her senshi are highly resistant to mind control, it should at least give you a chance of remaining yourself." She paused, "It will not be without cost."

Mercury, wide-eyed and trembling, considered her words. What convinced her was actually Beryl's hedging. She offered no certainties, no absolutes, just a chance, perhaps even a poor one, and Ami had never known a faker or con artist to present risk and uncertainties so openly. "What will the price be?"

Beryl swallowed hard, her face twisted in anguish, "Such a powerful spell, working at such a deep level, can only be fueled by a bargain with the Outside, which I will not do, or by the denial of pleasure for a long period, which we do not have time for, or by a combination of pain and pleasure... yours, and the spellcasters'. In other words... "
