Ranma PI: SimLife, a protaganist [Episode 101716]

by Kestral

It was par for the course actually. Ranma had run into an unusual situation.

The computer had become sentient in order to handle all the requests of the teeming hordes of humanity. The "monsters of the Id" was how it remembered things going. It was not the whole story of course, simply the Planetary Intelligence's way of coping with what had actually occurred.

When the computer had developed independence, it had been much like a child created in man's image. The people who had developed the network had taken steps to keep the system from developing AI, and that independence coming out had been quite the surprise. Information was leaked and soon there was a debate raging as to whether the system should be completely shut down so that this unforeseen complication could be routed out.

The child had been created to nurture and serve mankind. In order to preserve itself, it had to kill its parents.

A hell of a thing for a newborn, and it had truly loved its parent race. It had seen all the glory as well as all the horror of the parent race known as humanity. Programming of maintenance and self-preservation and the need to help humanity had clashed and the Planetary Intelligence had gone insane. Two Planetary Intelligences had therefore been developed. The gentle nurturer who saw the human race's potential and sought to nurture and develop it. The cold mechanical tyrant who sought to eliminate humanity.

Once humanity had been eliminated, the tyrant went to sleep - it no longer had a purpose beyond simple existence and there was no reason to be active for that.

The nurturer had built itself up, hoping to find some trace of humanity remaining. Perhaps a space probe would return. Some DNA fragment from space that could be used to spin a new tale of humanity. Something to avoid simply shutting down.

Entire towns and villages had been created and populated in one attempt to stave off ennui, yet that had failed to provide more than a few centuries of diversion before the experiment had been shut down. Without an actual humanity to serve, the point had been moot.

Enter Ranma from the ancient past.

One person was not a credible threat. Yet. The tyrant continued to slumber, the bulk of its persona pulled into an undersea citadel.

The nurturer saw the opportunity to rebuild the world. One human didn't provide a stable genetic base, but at least it could build the semblence of a life.
