Twelve Schools: the trial begins [Episode 102384]

by Kestral

There were twelve schools (actually thirteen if you counted the frozen one), each style having a basic level and a more advanced school. When the valley had been full of people and life, everyone had training in the more basic level - depending on which school they were aligned with. The Advanced Arts had been more basic then, but the history of only teaching the secrets of the Advanced Arts to specific heirs had been in place for a very very long time.

The Trial had also developed further. From a sacred cave to a maze built around it, with a large vaulted ceiling to replace the ceiling that had collapsed at one point.

The Twelve Schools were ancient and powerful, and not just anyone would walk their paths.

A scared little boy (not that he would admit to the first condition) walked into the winding paths, feeling his way along in the dark.

The spirits saw him, and judged.

The boy has potential. I'll give him that. No discipline to speak of, but oodles of talent.

The spirits were of the masters of those very Arts, all thirteen Schools were in attendance.

There are schools without suitable heirs.

Ranma could sense presences in the dark. One was cold and dispassionate beyond belief but that one seemed to be in the background.

Wrong way, child. Go back to the four way intersection and take a right. Now, where were we?

Deciding on whether to pass the boy or not, but you seem to have made that decision already.

Ranma shivered at the cold voice speaking for the first time.

If you ask me, as you should, the boy should die. Here and now. How are we supposed to inspire awe and terror of this Trial if you don't have some bloody horror imposed?

You're just still upset because your School was taken over by idiots who decided to violate the first precept and ended up getting frozen solid.

It wasn't a fair decision at all. Just because my School embraced the dark path before it. It's not like some of the styles didn't get used for assassination and espionage and such. Completely unfair.

Look, like it or not, I'm voting to pass the boy. It's not like everyone in the damn valley isn't related to each other at this point. If we don't get some new blood - we'll all ended up without practicing schools.

Or we'll end up with twits like Endymion as heirs. That boy spends entirely too much time primping in front of the mirror.

Ranma blinked as he realized he was beginning to see faint lights bobbing through the air.

You think you've got problems. Look at my heir. She's entirely too fond of other girls, and if she doesn't start liking boys there's the end of MY line.

Wind, she's only five years old. She might grow out of it.

Shadow's right. We need to maintain tough standards.

Thank you.

However we are also quite correct in that we need new blood and the boy does show potential.

There are heirs for the Schools Of Glacier, Mountain, Moon, Earth, Fire, Storm, Destruction, Sky, Waters, and Speed.

Why use the short forms? This is a formal occasion.

Because the boy is almost to the center. As I was saying, there are already proper heirs for many schools.

I dispute that my heir is a 'proper' one. She literally trips over her own shadow.

You think you've got it rough?

I've got an idea.

Ranma shuddered at the cold voice speaking.
