Twelve Schools: Trial Decision [Episode 102929]

by Kender

The fact that he was dealing with being in the dark with disembodied voices sounding around him was bad enough, but Ranma had to deal with that one voice that sounded cold and not nice at all. For most little boys his age, it would be a moment to do everything that kids did when faced with scary things. There was part of him that wanted to run away, crawl into a corner and cry, or simply call out for his mother.

But he was a martial artist and a Saotome, and his father had always told him that as such he should face his fears no matter what. He might be scared, but he couldn't simply give up. It wasn't bad to leave when trouble wasn't in the form that could be handled, but at the very least one had to show some strength... even though the elder Saotome had been a little... reluctant to face some things.

So, despite the white knuckled fist of one hand, he tried to stand up straight and show no fear.

Well, he is not giving up, which is good.

But he is still rather rough and unskilled.

Lessons will take care of that.

True, but is he the right one for us to pick. We are talking about someone who will have to carry the school we would choose for him, and we can't have a repeat of a school falling into darkness.

Rub it in, why don't you.

That's not my intention. Still, you have to admit that we do have to pick only those who would have strong wills and focus.

And so you would pick a boy with the impulse control of a fly?

Frowning to himself as he moved along, Ranma felt certain that he was strong, and that he had just been insulted by the cold voice.

He is still young, and given the chance, he can grow.

But how?

He has the will, the confidence, the talent, and the strength. Given the opportunity, he can grow into a fine heir.

I agree, but what about changing him for another heir?

For one thing, we can't just get rid of someone who's only offense is a bit of clumsiness.

Which isn't something good in a martial artist.

True, but in this case, we can solve two problems with one answer. We can both have a boy to have relationships with the girls, and keep another of the schools from fading into oblivion at the same time.

That sounded like it was good to Ranma, though he did have to wonder why it was so important that he be around girls.

Great. So how do we know what he'd do if he learned a school?

Why not ask him? Child? What would you do with the techniques of the Art if you learned them.

"Umm... Be the best? Train in 'em?" Ranma answered hesitantly. "And help people? Supposed ta protect the innocent if you're a martial artist, right?"

Why is it that I think that he's been listening to tales about 'grand heroes' and things like that?

Because he probably has?

But he believes in them. He is an innocent, without guile or hate.

Then I guess, there's no discussing it.

Yes. Both this discussion, and his trial have reached the end of the line. He has reached the center.

Ranma blinked as he realised that he had come into a rather large area. Stumbling around, he nearly tripped over some kind of low pedestal, but managed to stop himself before he fell.

Climb onto it, and prepare for your future.

Licking his dry lips, Ranma did as he was bade, finding himself facing a set of glowing columns.

And then all was light, while:
