A dim flash of light in an empty apartment heralded Setsuna’s return. A flick of her wrist sent the Garnet Rod slamming into a wall before it flickered once, then vanished. Setsuna stomped angrily over to a cabinet next to a dingy window. A loud crack split the air as the door splintered off the cabinet. Reaching in, Setsuna quickly tore the cap off a dusty bottle of absinthe before raising it to her lips and draining the bottle in one long swallow.
Sitting down heavily in a leather recliner, Setsuna dropped the centuries old bottle to the floor, sending it clattering off its long-empty brethren. A warm, peaceful haze settled down onto her mind, the stress of the past hour seeming to evaporate from her shoulders. A quiet, pleasure-filled sigh escaped her lips as they curled into a contented smile for a moment.
Sitting motionless, Setsuna’s mind floated in a euphoric haze. Dim images and old happy memories flashed past her jumbled consciousness for the better past of an hour before finally tapering off and returning her to reality. She blinked a few times and dry washed her face. ’What am I going to do? The Gates are sealed! That shouldn’t even be possible.’ Groggily pushing to her feet, she swayed for a moment before slowly stepping to the western bed and unceremoniously flopping down, sending the mattress bouncing for a moment. A deep, frustrated, sigh came from where her face was buried in the pillow. ’It doesn’t really matter I suppose. I’ll do what I’ve always done, my duty.’ One last deep breath and she slipped into blissful unconsciousness.
A shadowed form flickered into existence next to the chair a few seconds after Setsuna’s breathing evened out. Silent steps carried the form to the broken cabinet. A short rustling broke the quiet and a hand emerged from the cloak holding a bottle. Gently sitting it in the cabinet, a low murmur reverberated in the room for a moment before a think layer of dust formed on the bottle. The figure turned and silently walked back to the chair and quietly snatched an empty bottle from the stack. Stepping over to the bed, a distasteful frown crossed the figures mouth when Setsuna’s smile came into view. A quiet, “And you were doing so well.” A hollow tapping came from the bottle as the figure drummed their fingers. “Oh well. Everything will be back to normal tomorrow anyway. Sleep badly Guardian.” With that, the figure vanished, leaving the room silent save for Setsuna’s breathing.
