Magical Gates should be used with caution. There are several methods for creating such and they are all dependent on high level practitioners of one of the higher Arts.Psionic Gates usually lead to a subplane. In other universes, this is either the Ethereal or Astral Plane. Aramarian Psi-Gates lead to what is referred to as the Astral Plane, though those familiar with that of other universes insist that theirs is different.
Worldgates connect universes or subuniverses. They are normally static in both the entry and exit points, though one way worldgates exist. High level magical adepts are normally responsible for these.
Moongates, Stormgates, and Shadowgates each connect dependent on certain magical principles and usse of them runs higher than normal risks. Shadowgates in particular as they utilize the Shadowplane, which contains a number of beings that are not particularly kind to trespassers. The use of Moongates is made difficult because without special magic or specific Zones, it is impossible to know lunar positioning.
The most common Gate is a Runegate. Originally made by dwarves (though the elves dispute this) there is both an entry and an exit which are attuned to each other. There is usually a specific key required to open such Gates, though the composition of such varies from gate to gate.
The type of Gate can be determined by composition. Worldgates are the most varied and can look like almost anything from a normal doorway to a wardrobe made from the wood of Yggdrasil. Psi-gates normally have crystals imbued with psychic energy. Runegates normally have runes written in the stone surrounding them, hence the name.
The major problem with perfectly functioning gates however, is that those originally using them know where it leads and therefore don't bother to label them.

"So this is a Runegate, eh?" Marain wiped a smudge of dirt off her face with the back of her glove. "Never seen one before."
"Yes," said Erma. "I'll try to use Object Read."
"Is it safe?" asked Krioness. "These were mind flayers after all."
"I'm not a very powerful Seer," admitted Erma. "Still, it seems that if they were ready to use this as an emergency escape - it wouldn't be trapped."
"They underestimated the Mu Collective," said Krioness. "Even adult and experienced dragons give a Mu Hive plenty of room."
"More likely desperate," said Erma. "At least that's what I'm picking up. Desperation. Trying to create a psionic artifact. I can't tell why - it's just the impressions I'm picking up. This is definitely a Runegate but it predates the illithid. At least Sixth Age."
"That old?" Kironess ran a hand over the pitted stone. "Any way of telling where it goes?"
"Too old," said Erma, still concentrating on the portal. "Before the illithid arrived, there was a reptine scholar who studied it briefly. Before that - it's too far back for impressions to remain."
"If it's that old it may be unstable," pointed out Marain.
"It's solid rock just beyond this Ring," pointed out Ranma as he leaned on the wall just to prove it's solidity. "See what I-aiiiiiiiiiieeee!"
Having seen the male just fall through the now glowing ring, the various females in the cave blinked for a moment.
"It'll close in a second! Hurry!" Erma said as she bounded through and vanished.
"Impetuous youth," growled Krioness as she jumped through.
"Oh my. I had hoped to copy the runes down in my journal," fretted Jaim as she stepped over the bottom half of the ring.
"I suppose that's one way to do it," said Marain as she pushed Tamlyn through ahead of her.
Eventually the glow about the ring faded but the cave was empty by then.
As for Ranma, he found himself:
