Twelve Schools: Genre staples [Episode 104492]

by Kestral

There were, of course, several requirements of this situation.

Now that Ranma had been selected as a student and at least potential Heir to a style, that plopped him down squarely in the genre.

Not all of the Schools had escaped having rivals, some friendly and others not, or entanglements of honor or duty or other things.

There were three King styles practiced, for example, though two were believed lost to those within Shangri-la. Of the Ox King and the Tiger King styles, nothing had been heard of for generations. The last practitioner of Ox King had apparently perished during the Boxer Rebellion in 1900. The last anyone had heard of Tiger King had been nearly a century earlier than that. Both had been rivals of styles within Shangri-la, now believed lost to the relentless march of time outside the valley.

Even as Ranma slept, things were developing within the valley and without.

The style of the Monkey King was at its most basic level of philosophy quite simple. Adapt. Survival dependend on adapting to changing situations. Learn. Figure out the steps to not only adapt to the situation but to turn it to your advantage. Excel. It wasn't enough to merely survive. One had to rise above the situation and take command of it - to use the opportunity to become stronger.

Some of the existing Schools made plans for the new Heir.

The Healer who had tended his wounds looked to her daughter Ami. Not that she was alone as others now sought ties between their daughters and this new boy in the Valley.

Some, like Rei of the Sacred Flame, frowned at the attention being paid to this boy and decided to prove she was better than he was.

While the Steadfast Earth had split ages ago to produce the Ox King, and the latter style believed lost, young Mamoru saw the boy who was now automatically his rival. Whereas before he had no competition when it came to a future with one of the young girls - now there was one. Something he would care more about when he hit puberty, but which was annoying even now.

As for Genma, he had discovered that Shangri-la made its own vintages of alcoholic substances. Unfortunately, some of them were sufficiently potent that he didn't currently know what he was doing. A little celebration, a little drunken wandering, a few promises here and there. Perfectly harmless right?
