Nodoka smiled as the girl approached, obviously knowing nothing of what she planned. That was the way that she wanted it so that the girl would not have some ready made answer that she thought would be settled. She knew that any young woman would have had some sort of reaction and didn't blame them for it. But she wanted to see what the girl would do immediately after finding out. Then her reaction would be genuine, and she'd be able to see what sort of girl her son would be getting.

Not that she would have been a mean hostess. After all that would be impolite, especially considering that she was hoping for this child to bring her grandchildren into the world. Alienating her now simply wouldn't do, and she hadn't done anything wrong. Just showing up proved how responsible she was, and that said a lot.

But most important was the fact that she knew for a fact that this girl could protect herself from the sorts of thing that might come to bother her son. She didn't want to risk a poor girls life, so she'd made sure to check out the girls she had in mind before just deciding to do this. And through the searching it had turned out that this girl would be perfectly capable in what the future might hold for her.

As for how she found out, it was merely one of those things that as a mother she seemed able to do.

Which meant that she wasn't going to immediately tell anyone how much she knew and how she knew it.

Instead, she merely watched as her visitor came to sit with her, and with her mother's eye she assessed:
