Pewter: Thay Troubled [Episode 106949]

by Kender

Krycia had gotten to her current level of success by having a talent that was well suited to the environment she was living in. She wasn't overwhelmingly powerful, nor was she sneaky and conniving, but she was able to detect possible threats to her intrests. Most times this came from other wizard, however she tended to deal with them decisively and completely.

Their time on this strange land had not been good for her nerves, as she could feel that something wasn't quite right with the place. But it had been isolated and uninhabited, so it made of a nice place to make a base at. So she'd merely kept her eye out for anything that could be a problem, and tried to be prepared for whatever might come.

Seeing a band of adventurers stumble onto their camp wasn't totally strange, as it had already been a consideration. It had been a surpise to see them, and that made them wait for a few moments. However it was one of the woodland creatures that had her concerned, as the way it looked around on a nearby branch seemed... off somehow. So, she sent a magic bolt at it, expecting to hit a wizard with a shapechanging spell, a druid or something like that.

What she got was the bluebird flying out of the small explosion and sending a Chain Lightning spell at her so fast she barely got even a weak shield up.

Which was when all hell broke loose.

For the most part, the dragons hadn't been pleased to see the encampment in their lands. Some just hated humans, and others hated slavers, especially slavers from Thay, but they agreed that this was not something that they liked. They was some dissent on what to do with them, what with the adventurers around, and wanting to keep their secrets.

But when on of their number was attacked for no reason, they all went into action. Even then there was some division on why they did it, but the end result was the same. When faced with an incursion of spell users who attacked, they would defend themselves.

And so they did so well.

Ranmanobaka hugged the log he'd been using for transport and stopped complaining about being on a wide expanse of that disgustingly clear stuff. He was exceedingly pleased that he'd stayed to the opposite bank, and so had kept a low profile.

After all, he liked his deep scented skin on his back, thank you very much. Dealing with a band of adventurers such as he had been was bad enough. Red Wizards were worse, what with slavery or death the only ways they allowed an outsider to be. Add in creatures that could do that, and one got a mess he was glad that he was only on the edge of.

It was much better than being the tattooed wizardess who'd thrown that bolt and was currently learning that when one was trying to get rid of something much higher on the food chain than one was, it was important to get it on the first try. Otherwise, the act would make that creature very cranky, as was the case here, since she was getting slammed around by attacks way more powerful than her own.

That made him wonder if everyone else was that thick in the head, or if it was just his day to find that sort.

"Go, little friends of justice, go!" cheered Amelia. "YAAAAAAAY!"

M'reth gave the kender a sour look before turning to see the carnage unfolding on the riverbank. "Where did all the animals with the magical powers come from?"

"They were sent to aid us in the quest for justice against the bad guys! They have to be!"

"I don't know about here, but on my world, squirrels don't chase around guys with swords while shooting them with fire magic."

"Hmmm..," Lena murmured, "They have to be shapechangers, but where did they come from. Wizards don't usually group this much, and about the only group I can come up with are the dragons. But that would mean that they'd have to have a reason to come here..."

"Huh?"

"Think about it. It could have been one, or several that came here, but whatever they are, something about this island intrested them enough to come."

"True enough, but what would interest them so much?" the Mithra thief asked.

As a group, the others on the raft turned to look at Sinda.

"What?" the Drow paladin replied as she wondered why they all were gazing at her, while:
