"Well Nabs, this ones on me." Ranma said looking around the store. "Gimme a yell if anything catches your eye."
"Will do." Nabiki said moving to peruse the mystical items near the door.
"Say what's this?" Ranma said crouching down near the bargain bin, where something seemed to... twist in the shadows.
"Hmm, that? Oh dear, I didn't even know that was here." Storeman stammered. "It's um... a power ring. From the Guardians of Oa."
"Strange. I thought they were all green." Ranma said reaching for the ring box and the black ring it held.
"And how would you know about interstellar law enforcement, Ranma." Nabiki said coming over to rummage through the bin.
"Pops was paranoid about cops, and I got to know one of the current Lanterns, John Stewart." Ranma said briefly. "So what's the difference between the green rings of the lantern corps and what I've got in my hand?"
"Higher capacitor, for one thing. A green ring needs charged once every 24 hours. This one can go 72 hours between charges. Also certain preservation safeguards in the green ring are not present in this one."
"Meaning..." Nabiki looked up from the bin worriedly.
"The ring works by the will of the wearer. But there are some situations where the ring will not obey that will."
"Such as?"
"Specifically when the will attempts to violate the guardian code of total preservation." Storeman by way of explanation.
"Huh?"
"The Guardians believe that every sentient being, and quite a few nonsentient ones have the right to live."
"Even virulent communicable diseases?" Nabiki asked.
"Even those." Ranma said. "Stewart sensei, he's the who taught me about the Lanterns, and the Guardians, and all, he told me that there's a big difference between preservation and freedom."
"Wait, then you're saying... this ring can kill?"
Ranma nodded grimly. "Why the Guardians would create something like this I can only guess. If the Lanterns are their equivalent of police, then maybe this for a SWAT member or something. Anyway, I'll be taking this if it's all right with you."
"Are you sure about this Ranma?"
"Nabiki, this ring is the ultimate power up. Imagination without limits. Can you imagine Kuno, or Ryoga, or Akane getting their hands on this?" Both Nerimans shivered at the thought. "I'll take it for safe keeping for now. Whether I decide to use it or just contact Stewart Sensei is something I've yet to decide."
"Good choice sir, and you- Miss don't touch that!" Storeman yelled as Nabiki wrapped her hand around-
