Great Will: Shadow War [Episode 109634]

by Kestral

"The world is one where most humans go through their normal lives, living normal existences, and essentially asleep to events going on around them," said the tengu, raising his head to look up at his guest. "Even those whose lives brush against the war going on around them - they tend to discount what they experienced. If you prefer the metaphor, they simply refuse to wake up to an unpleasant reality."

"I see," said Genma, walking alongside the creature and looking around.

"Not all of what your people term 'monsters' are hostile towards humanity, and some of our allies are only on our side because they too are threatened by the others," continued the tengu, his wings fluttering lightly with each hop to allow him to keep pace with the longer-legged Genma.

"Such as 'tengu' and 'kappa'," said Genma, seeing something sliding into a pool of water at their approach.

"You and your son have made the trip beyond the walls of reality," said the tengu. "To survive such a trip is almost unbelievable. To be unchanged would be impossible."

"Yet here we are," said Genma. "Unchanged as you can see."

The tengu whipped out a scroll, activated it with a drop of blood, and slapped it to Genma's chest.

"AIYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!" screamed Genma as he was enveloped in a pillar of flame.

The tengu lightly landed twenty feet away, squinting into the inferno.

"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!" continued to scream Genma.

The tengu sighed and raised his voice so that the human could hear him over the roar of the flames. "Our seers detected your emergence into this world. We researched. We already know that you are immune to fire and frost. That you can even regenerate from wounds that would be fatal to nearly anyone else."

"I am?" asked Genma, now noticing that he wasn't being burned.

"Yes," said the tengu. "You aren't invulnerable, nor are you immortal, but it would take effort for even a powerful monster to kill you. An Infernal Pillar scroll is hardly going to even singe you."

"Couldn't you have found a better way to demonstrate this?" asked Genma as the flames died out. He noticed the scorch marks and melted look to the rock underfoot and crossed off the possibility of this being an illusion.

"You'd prefer I took out a gun and shot you?" asked the tengu.

"Well, that might have been..." began Genma.

BLAM BLAM BLAM!

Genma picked himself off the ground, noticing that the wounds were closing up even as he watched. Then he spat out a bullet that had apparently gotten into his throat. "Uhm, I think I'll take your word for the rest of it."

"He can be taught," remarked the tengu softly.

"Hmph," said Genma as the cavern opened up into a large training area. "So the human race is threatened by monsters lurking among the populace? With a select few who knowingly fight the evil that threatens them all?"

"That's basically it," said the tengu. "You understand the basics."

"Yes, well, it sounds like a few manga series I've had to confiscate from the boy," said Genma. "For the sake of his training, you understand."

"Ah, yes, we do that in our world too," said the tengu. "That way if someone DOES stumble across the truth, they don't always stand around in a completely clueless daze when confronted by ghouls and the like."

"I see," said Genma. Oddly enough he could picture THAT too. People staring in disbelief as the big thing with the pointy teeth walked up to chomp on them.

The tengu nodded. "We determined that your son is also changed in that-"
