Elfguest: Pleasantries over an open hearth [Episode 111313]

by Void

”Oh my.” Kasumi moved over to the kneeling knight. “There’s no need to do that. Please, stand up.” She took him by one arm and urged him to stand.

George allowed himself to be drawn to his feet as he gazed upon the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. His were eyes that saw deeply and this girl, no this woman, had an inner grace and beauty that matched her outward form. “I but do as is required when entering the shrine of one who is as gracious as she is beautiful, and as beautiful as she is kind.”

Kasumi was startled to realize that she was blushing and, upon that realization, blushed even more deeply. “You are too kind. Are you one of Ranma’s friends?”

George berated himself for acting like some lovesick schoolboy, ”My deepest apologies. I forget my manners. I am Lord George Savendil, Protector of the Kingdom of Elendor, Duke of Upper Cross, Kings Champion, First Paladin of the Order of Valour, bearer of the holy sword Dragons Bane. I place myself entirely at your service.” George ignored the low voiced mutter of “Insane sword Hatchling Killer is more like it.”

Kasumi’s face remained flushed, “My name is Tendo Kasumi. Please excuse me, I was just making dinner.”

”Not at all, my Lady. I would never wish to delay you from your duties.” replied George.

”Oh, it’s not a duty. I enjoy cooking for my family.”

Alecti smirked as the two began some obscure human courtship ritual. To think that he was witness to the day that Bloody George was brought low by a woman. Perhaps being companion to the Godslayer wasn’t that bad after all. This would make a most amusing tale to be told at the next gathering. It was even worth sitting through all the boring inanities humans went through before mating. He believed they called it ‘small talk’. Dragon’s engaged in no such foolishness. A nicely presented hoard as the backdrop to a succulent Elven dinner, that was the way to woo a woman. He could see it now. Him and Nabiki sitting across from one… Alecti mentally slapped himself again as he realized where his thoughts were heading. The girl was a human! Mother was going to die of shame if he kept this up. He needed a diversion. Luckily, George was right there. Alecti leaned close to his ear, “I must say I’m impressed. Not here half a mark and already wooing one of the daughters of the house. I never knew you had it in you. There must be dozens of little Georges running around Elendor.” Oh yes, that was perfect. He had never seen a human reach quite that color of purple before. Unfortunately, before anything else could happen Kasumi intervened.

”Oh dear. I decided to make sukiyaki tonight, it’s one of Ranma’s favorites, but we don’t seem to have all the ingredients. I’ll have to send Nabiki out to get some more. Nabiki,” she called.

Nabiki stuck her head in the room, “You need something, sis?”

”I need some last minute items. Could you get everything on this list for me?” She handed a short list to her sister, who quickly scanned it.

”I could, sis, but don’t you think that it would be better to send Ranma?”

”I would, but you know that you’re much better with the merchants than Ranma is.” Kasumi smiled sweetly at her sister, who was about to fold when she was saved.

Ranma looked in from behind Nabiki, “You need something, Kasumi?”

Nabiki moved into the kitchen, followed by Ranma and the two elven girls, “Actually Saotome, Kasumi wants...”

Kasumi cut in, “to know if I could borrow your friend Alectic to help Nabiki carry a few last minute items back from the market.” Nabiki sighed, knowing she had lost this round.

Ranma looked confused for a second, “Alectic? Oh, yeah. Sure. I mean, if it’s all right with him.” Ranma scratched the back of his pigtail in embarrassment, “So you’ve, umm, met Alec already then?” At Kasumi’s nod he continued, “Right, well, you know Alec,” the dragon scowled at the repeated shortening of his name as Ranma gestured to the knight, “this is, err…”

Kasumi took pity on the poor boy, “Lord George was kind enough to introduce himself to me earlier. Who are your other two friends?”

”Heh heh,” Ranma chuckled nervously, “this is…”

”I am called Mist,” the cleric supplied, “and this is my friend Thorn.”

”Yeah, Mist and Thorn.” Ranma gestured towards Kasumi, “Everyone, this is Tendo Kasumi.” A wave of greetings went back and forth between Kasumi and the girls. “Oh, Kasumi, I kinda invited everyone over for dinner tonight if that’s alright with you.”

”That’s fine Ranma-kun. Nabiki was just about to get the last few things I need.”

”I guess that’s my cue,” grumbled Nabiki. “You coming?”

”Excuse me?” squeaked a very discomfited Alecti.

Nabiki sighed and spoke slowly, as if to a small child, “Are… you… coming… to… the… market… with… me. It… is… time… for… us… to… go.”

Alecti flushed and swept past Nabiki, wondering how he got himself into this mess.
