"I see you were able to puzzle my directions," said a gentle voice from right behind Naruto.
If he'd had the energy left, he would have leapt into the air in shock. Exhaustion, however, had set in many hours before. And so, with a slow jerkiness to his motion, he slowly turned himself around on the ground to face... her... still a her.
"Who are you, and what have you done with Kakashi-sensei?" Naruto grumbled.
She let out an exasperated sigh, taking a seat on the ground about five feet away from him. Naruto noticed with a blush that she winced as she sat down, something down there still a little... sensitive. His embarrassment was only compounded byu the fact that he was pretty sure he was the reason behind the soreness...
"Hum... I guess I should start at the beginning..." she muttered, assuming a thoughtful pose. "It all started around, oh... ten years ago. You are familiar with Sasuke's past, and what happened with the Uchiha clan, correct?"
Naruto nodded after a moment of hesitation.
"His older brother killed all the other people in his clan, right?" he asked.
"That's basically what happened. Never had there been one so skilled in the use of the Sharingan as Sasuke's older brother, but... corrupted by Orochimaru, he did many horrible things. It's almost a miracle that he spared Sasuke's life as it is."
"What does this have to do with Kakashi?" Naruto demanded in as tired voice.
"Sasuke wasn't the only survivor of the Uchiha clan, Naruto," she said, a far away look in her visible eye. "There was one other, left for dead, yet still clinging on to life... their mother... Inuko."
Naruto blinked for a moment, his tired mind trying to figure out what she was saying...
"You mean, you're..."
"Sasuke's mother, Uchiha Inuko," she said, bowing slightly. "I disguised myself as a man, keeping the illusion that the real me had died that dreadful night. This allowed me to live without fear of my eldest son coming back to finish me off, and kept Orochimaru from trying to use me to get to the legendary Sharingan."
"But... you only have one Sharingan eye?"
"Yes... the cut I received that night over my left eye changed the Chakra paths there... I cannot turn the ability off in my left eye. That is somewhat advantageous as I have fueled the rumor that I had the eye surgically put in, which only furthered Orochimaru's disinterest in me as a... servant..."
"Huh," Naruto said tiredly. "Makes sense... I guess..."
"Not so change the subject," Inuko said suddenly, "but..."
"How in the hell can you tell, we just... you know... yesterday!"
