Yes, this was a day that he could sit back, read his newspaper, and sigh happily. The weather was perfect with a shining sun combined with a temperature that wasn’t too hot nor too cold. The house had just been cleaned once again and his lunch was sitting comfortably within his belly. The house was peaceful and the Wa was balanced just right. ‘Truly, nothing could spoil this day.’ Soun smiled happily as he turned the page to his newspaper.
Thus, he wasn’t overly worried when the telephone rang.
Perhaps he should have been.
Or, he could just not have any knowledge of such concepts of irony and how they could impact his life.
“Father.” Kasumi called out in her peaceful tone of voice as she entered the room. Glancing upwards, Soun felt his heart lighten as he took in her peaceful smile. His eldest daughter had always managed to broadcast a sense of serenity whenever she entered a room.
“Yes, dear?” The Tendo patriarch responded, calmly folding his newspaper and setting it on the table.
“I just answered the telephone…” The eldest daughter began before her brow furrowed in puzzlement. “It was the strangest thing…”
Soun blinked rapidly several times. “What was strange about it?” He questioned, lifting his cup of tea to take a long sip.
“He said that his name was Saotome Genma…” Kasumi started to say only to be cut off by her father.
“Genma!? My old friend?” Soun cried out happily. “What did he want?”
“He said that he was calling to warn us, father.” The eldest Tendo daughter replied, her face openly displaying her puzzlement.
Soun found himself puzzled also. “Warn us? About what?” He mused, rubbing his chin thoughtfully.
“He said that his son has finished his training trip and was on the way over right now.” Kasumi replied.
“What wonderful news!” Soun felt tears coming, but instead of crying over his long dead wife, they were tears of joy for once. “Now the two schools can be joined!”
“Pardon me?” Kasumi said, her hand covering her mouth to hide her shock.
Dismissing his daughter’s reaction, Soun eagerly returned to his questioning. “What else did he say?”
“Just that he would be with his sensei.” Kasumi responded.
“I thought Genma was teaching the boy.” Soun muttered, his brow furrowing to indicate his deep thoughts.
The eldest Tendo girl shook her head slowly. “No, the man said that his son’s sensei was called…” She paused for a second to make sure that she recalled the correct title. “the Master.”
Upon hearing the dreaded word once again, Tendo Soun paled. Noticeably. In a lightning quick reaction that told of his countless hours practicing his art, the Tendo patriarch reacted with all the skill, grace, and decorum that indicated his status in the art…
He fainted.
“Father?” Kasumi rushed to her father’s side. Recognizing the symptoms of shock from the medical books that she had read, she quickly began to comfort and treat her father. Needless to say, she only had two more words to add to the conversation… “Oh, my.”
