Nor could one of the swords that required a pure heart, a dedication to goodness or justice, or protecting the innocent. Ranma's motivations were wounded pride and humiliation, not exactly qualities that made for a noble warrior - though it wasn't completely unheard of for a hero to develop from such.
On the other hand, Ranma was a promising student and fighting ancient evils. It wasn't like they could see sending him back completely unarmed.
After considerable thought and searching, a compromise was found.
A tree with spiritual properties, some sort of sacred tree in a shrine, had lost a limb down in Okayama. Something that had been a gift at the Shrine Convention back in '77. It could be turned into a bokutoh quite easily, and serve as a spirit-focus.
With the new weapon and his training, Ranma was confident - he could fight those gumbies and not have to be dangling from the ceiling again.
