Shadowkiller: Soulstealer (DARK) [Episode 114162]

by SP

Saotome Genma, a stocky man in his late twenties, stumbled down the street on the way from the sake parlor to his friend Tendo Soun's house - whom he was currently carrying half-slung over his shoulder. Only Genma's greater bulk had prevented him from reaching the same state of drunken stupor - the night had been spent in celebration of the birth of Soun's third child; yet another daughter.

As Genma rounded the gate-post to the Tendo Dojo compound, he stopped dead. Something wasn't right, but he couldn't put his finger on it. Cautiously he walked towards the engawa, peering this way and that, when suddenly a small creature, not much bigger than a large cat, but with glowing red eyes, bolted out of the house and bounced off the top of the wall. Even from a distance of over a dozen meters, Genma could feel the malice radiating off the small creature.

Genma hurried inside, and deposited Soun none too gently on the floor, and raced upstairs to check on the children - and on Kimiko. The presence had been familiar, and Genma had learned to associate it with the death of pretty young women. Every time he had felt it thus far, a short time later the dried husk of a young woman would turn up. But according to the papers, corpses like that only turned up in places Genma could have sworn they were visiting on their training trip...

The realization struck him like a flash - it had to be Happosai! It made sense - the pretty victims, energy drained; the short stature of the perpetrator; the locations... it all matched. But there was no time to think more on the matter - he'd found Kimiko, on the floor of her bedroom, and she was leaking ki like a sieve, fading fast.

In a flash, Genma was on the floor beside her, and doing the best he could of stopping the ki-hemorrhage, trying different combinations of pressure points and tsubos. Genma was no expert, but he had had a good teacher, who he wished was here right this minute.

For hours, Genma fought a losing battle, not able to even phone for help for fear of his 'patient' dying on him while he tried to get a doctor that would understand the problem. Finally, as the first light of dawn illuminated the eastern skies, Genma sat back, running his hand through his thinning hair. He'd done it, Kimiko would live - though how long, he couldn't say. But even if Kimiko lived forever, Genma swore, Happosai would be destroyed!
