And it had resulted in Ranma and his father winding up as one of the few men on the planet.
The whole thing had started on a small island in the Pacific, though who owned it was up for grabs. Officially it was the property of a corporation out of Ghana, but the company itself was owned by a holding company registered in Indonesia. Whoever was in charge of that had to be a ghost, since that came up as the first domino in a series of companies, some of which were owned by others amongst the stack.
In any case, one day, ten years before the arrival of the two Saotomes, it had been the start of a major disaster. Whatever had been there had been released, resulting in the sudden striking down of nearly every man on the planet. It happened over a bit of time, but by the time that it had ended, there was only a small proportion of the men left that had once been on the planet, and not all of them were well.
At the start, the Americans had blamed the Soviets for having a secret biological weapons factory there.
The Soviets had blamed the Americans for secretly designing experiemental area weapons on the island.
Several religious groups explained the situation as an act of God, though, whether it was some reward, or a punishment depended on who was talking, when they were saying it, and about whom.
A couple of fringe individuals and groups declared that it was the action of a secret international conspiracy and/or aliens.
Some simply thought it was a natural disaster that for some strange reason attacked only men.
Others considered it likely the result of a corporation pursuing scientific advancement too far, and without regard for the consequences.
But nobody knew exactly what had happened, and the panic kept anyone from really investigating it once it was realised that without men, there was little possibility of a new generation. Humanity could possibly die out if a sufficent number of males were born, and that caused a whole new amount of chaos. That had been taken care of in different ways in different places.
However, it was settled down and set by the time that the two martial artists had arrived on this world. Both of them were a rather rare commodity, and not one that was easily forgotten. It was both a dangerous thing to be male, and a precious one.
So they'd learned to be careful, and adapted to the situation while:
