Liberty Station - Orbitals: Get Your Ass to Mars!! (A Write-Up) [Episode 120199]

by DeputyJones

Name: Liberty Station, sometimes called “Little Luna.”

Original Sponsoring Nation: Mined and converted into a space manufacturing facility by the Tirolian Mercantile Empire – later captured by an Earth-Zentraedi allied fleet. It was then administered by the Robotech Defense Force (RDF) for the United Earth Government (UEG). Later forced to declare independence to protect inhabitants from the Earth’s xenophobic policies after the takeover of the UEG following the departure of the Robotech Expeditionary Force (REF).

Position: Geosynchronous orbit over the old Mars Base colony site.

Size: Roughly 3.2 kilometers larger than the asteroid 3 Juno.

Internal Gravity: Produced by gravity control generators. Set at 1 g in living areas, 0.2 in docking areas (can be changed with some work), and can vary in manufacturing areas.

Population: 1.7 million – 980,000 humans, 620,000 Zentraedi (95% micronized), 90,000 Zentraedi/Terran hybrids, and 10,000 rescued Tirolians. The Zentraedi have a stable relationship with the humans several decades old, and the Tirolian refugees are generally quite friendly and curious about Earth society. The relations between the Tirolians and the Zentraedi are rather uncomfortable at the moment, but are slowly improving.

Organization/History: Power is shared between by the democratic Liberty City Council headed by the Mayor of Liberty City and the RDF High Command headed by Major General Craig Evans.

The Mayor and other Council members never leave Liberty during his or her term of office, which is five years, with the ability to be re-elected once. The twelve Council members other than the Mayor are elected from the twelve living sectors of Liberty City, and four positions on the Council are due for refilling every two years. The Mayor is elected by the people and the Council members have no say in his or her appointment.

General Evans has held his position as military commander of Liberty Station since the REF departure, and has the respect of both those under his command and the civilian community. He was originally a member of the British Special Air Service (SAS) during the Global Civil War. After the war, he became part of the newly formed RDF Marine Corps, where he obtained the rank of Brigadier General. He and a Marine unit survived the Rain of Death by being in transit at the time in the Scottish Highlands. Sadly, his eight months pregnant wife Jennifer did not. After this, his job became his spouse, and those under his command, his sons and daughters. Admiral Gloval promoted Evans to the rank of Lieutenant General and appointed him head of the RDF in the British Isles approximately two and one-half hours before his death.

Craig Evans‘ position in Liberty started approximately eight months after the destruction of New Macross City. The still unmanipulated UEG Supreme Council approved his promotion to Major General and his appointment to command the newly renamed Liberty, much to the ire of Anatole Leonard, who had not been able to put him under his thumb with many other RDF higher ups. The next few years before the launch of the SDF-3 UES Pioneer saw many Zentraedi and sympathizers migrating to Liberty Station to escape the growing xenophobia on the surface. After the REF left, Anatole Leonard‘s Armies of the Southern Cross (ASC) staged a silent coup d'état of the UEG, and Leonard used blackmail material gained on the Supreme Council to have himself installed as Supreme Commander of the Earth‘s military. The planet bound RDF assets were absorbed into the ASC and any Zentraedi or supporters were -sometimes forcibly- removed from service. The sole exception was Dana Sterling, who could not be denied entrance into the United Earth Military Academy. This was due to her position under public scrutiny and the support of only UEG Supreme Council member to not be manipulated by Leonard — Major General Rolf Emerson, who could not be removed due to his high popularity among the lower ranking military officers.

When the ASC turned to orbit, the forces on Liberty Station and Moon Base Apollo were the only remaining RDF assets in existence. The good news was that they represented the heavily armed RDF Spacy. The bad news was that ASC operatives had already infiltrated Apollo. Fortunately, while the command staff of Apollo were firmly in Leonard‘s pocket, the actual soldiers steadfastly refused to fire on their Liberty compatriots. Evans then sent a secret message to UEG Headquarters in Monument City, which basically stated that if any forces were to attack Liberty, he had been assured via hyperspace communiqué that the REF would return to support him. Not wanting to have his own forces decimated by a returning fleet of angry REFers, Leonard backed off.

During the Second Robotech War (SRW), those aboard Liberty Station kept the REF informed of the happenings in Earthspace, and when the final battle between the depleted ASC forces and the Robotech Masters occurred, a majority of the RDF fleet was sent to support the remaining defenders. After the battle, the pathetically small RDF forces remaining began a humanitarian rescue operation for those clones jettisoned from the motherships — an operation the ASC completely refused to cooperate in (in fact, several of their fighters were witnessed shooting space suited clones!). The clones rescued were of the Engineering, Artistry, Science, and Medical Triumvirates. Sadly, most of the clones had already died of asphyxiation. Also recovered from the battle site were seventeen moderately damaged Roil Assault Corvettes. Scientists brought back samplings of the Flower of Life from the Earth, and began growing them to harvest the Protoculture with the help of the Tirolians.

Following the SRW, Liberty began using it production capabilities to produce materials and supplies for the recovering Earth. When the Invid invaded, the RDF immediately informed the REF and switched its production lines to full military output. They bore silent witness to the massacre of the Mars Division, and provided safe haven for the surviving Garfish of the Jupiter Division. Unfortunately, when Neptune Division began defold operations, one of their ships chose the location of Liberty to do so. The result was that the station was phased out of its universe, and into Mars orbit in the Rifts universe.

Power: Power is supplied to Liberty Station by forty-eight Reflex Furnaces. There are supposedly twelve other Reflex Furnaces in the currently unused sections of the station.

Defenses: Liberty has a series of laser cannons, particle beam cannons, and laser point-defense weapons in strategic locations around the station and are constantly ready for use by shifts of soldiers in three separate control rooms. Sensors are advanced, and can normally detect things from its position out to a distance of 1.2 AU (Note: Due to energy radiating from ley lines in the Sol System, this range is reduced by one-third. Any readings from within The Zone are almost completely incomprehensible.).

Station defense also includes three Tristar Cruisers (UES Tusk, UES Triton, & UES Thrasher), seven Garfish Escort Cruisers (UES Long Sax, UES Garrote, UES Trident, UES Masakari, UES Boku-toh, UES Broadsword, & UES Battleaxe), three Hermes Carriers (UES Ark Royal [ARMD Space Platform 04], UES Saratoga [ARMD Space Platform 06], & UES Ticonderoga [ARMD Space Platform 12]), six Oberth Destroyers (UES Tsiolkovsky, UES Hubble, UES Goddard, UES Von Braun, & UES Cape Canaveral), one Marathon Transport (UES Sugarbowl), thirteen Gossamer Transport Shuttles, six Pegasus Assault Shuttles, and thirteen Horizon Dropships. There are also two Thuverl-Salan Destroyers that are currently unmanned, and the aforementioned recovered seventeen Roil Assault Corvettes that are currently undergoing examination, repair, and refitting.

Exports: None.

Imports: Needed water and raw materials are recovered by Folding to the Jovian moon Callisto, by the UES Sugarbowl. A small mining outpost has been established there and when mined, the gathered materials are stored within the station.

Diplomatic Relations: While willing to have open relationships with all members of the Orbital Community, the Community itself has opinions just the opposite. The Orbitals see the Liberty forces the same as anything that came of a Rift, invaders which threaten there existence and way of life. The only power in orbit which may hold differing opinions would be the Outcast Station, who are treated as second-class citizens by the other colonies, but even they are wary of the unknown factor which is Liberty Station.

The Moon Colony ice-mining operation on Deimos is left alone, but those running it are frightened by working near the ”dangerous aliens.• Likewise, the mining of the asteroid belt is unhindered as well. The RDF has secretly tapped into some of the communications in The Zone in order to provide information on the current situation above the Earth. Also, while not part of the Community, Liberty does participate in the Containment of Earth. They will destroy any threat (and ONLY a threat) which may come from the surface of the Earth.
