The ginzuishou had existed before Serenity the Second's birth. It had existed before Queen Serenity the First. It had existed before the Moon Kingdom's foundation - in fact it had been the existence of the ginzuishou that had made the Moon Kingdom, the planetary castles, and the Senshi powerups possible in the first place.
For hundreds of generations, men (at first) then women (almost exclusively since the rise of the Moon Kingdom's matriarchy) had focussed their will, their emotions, hopes, dreams, and drives into the crystal. Add to that cycles of time travel, the occasional destruction of the universe and it reappearing to merge with its past self.
So the ginzuishou was no longer as perfect as it had been. Corrupted might not be the right word though. Tainted would be closer.
It still wasn't quite alive, not truly sentient or self-aware. It was an Artifact of nearly pure Order, and in those times it had gone forward beyond the time of Chibi-usa's reign and faced the destruction of All That Was in a cosmic conflagration, it knew in its limited way that pure Order did not avail it in the end.
Which was why Usagi had lost it this time. The ginzuishou had found something non-evil but also non-order. This being was composed of Order and Chaos. There was a caring heart there - and that called also to the ginzuishou.
The crystal was actually more like a computer, one on the verge of becoming a fully fledged AI, but lacking some vital spark. The "taint" of all those previous users - the shadows of their essences left behind - stirred.
Ranma yelped as the crystal flew from his hand, burned through his shirt, and grafted itself on his chest at the top of the breastbone.
At the Gates Of Time, Sailor Pluto was taken aback as the timestream started giggling at her.
