Asuka stood, brushing at her school uniform gently. She paused and glanced up at the building, an uncertain look on her face. Then she shook her head and raised a clenched fist in front of her. "No way, I'm not gonna let something as dumb as comic book flying stop me!" Blinking she whipped her head around searching for anyone nearby. When she realized she didn't see anyone she sighed in relief.
"Ok, Straight worked fine, but turning went nuts . . . This time I'll try jumping at a much steeper angle, and hold off on changing direction till I'm up there." Nodding her head she looked around again.
"Allright, time to fly. Time to break the laws of aerodynamics and emulate a rocket. Time to . . ." shaking her head she lowered her arms to her side, and started sprinting down the street.
"One Two THREE!" she counted, then leapt, thrusting her arms upward as she shot into the sky.
Shinji slowed and halted as he saw Asuka's from shoot skyward. "She's alright," he sighed.
"Isn't she resistant to damage?" Rei asked as she came to a halt behind him.
"Well, there are a few trees . . ."
"Ah, secret vulnerability! I'd forgotten." Rei nodded to herself.
Shinji kept himself from glancing back at his fellow pilot. "Well, if Asuka's alright, we really should go over and see what's happened to the others."
"Wait!"
Shinji looked back at Rei. The pale skinned girl was glancing down at herself as she stood feet spread and knees bent, one arm extended toward him while the other was extended outward at about waist level. Rei nodded then looked back at Shinji. "Doesn't Hikari have telepathic abilities?"
Shinji nodded uncertainly. "Yes . . . um, is there a reason you're standing like that?"
Rei blinked, lowering her hands and shifting into a shallower stance. "One of the other me's found a good source of information on super heroes, and that posture is highly recommended.
In the mall food court, Rei sipped at a milkshake as she looked in fascination through her new copy of "How to draw comics, by Jack Kirby."
"Oh . . . What was that about Hikari again?" Shinji asked in an uncertain tone.
"If she has telepathic powers, she might be able to hear and respond if we think about her hard enough. That would greatly improve the efficiency of our search."
Sensing a little of the calm efficiency he usually associated with Rei in her last statement, Shinji nodded. "Yeah, that sounds right, so . . ."
Rei had already tilted her head back, closing her eyes and pressing her fingertips to her temples. "Hikari, Hikari." She whispered intensely.
