According to high school history - in 199x, the War had come to Earth. All the dark and terrible creatures of myth and legend had started coming out of the closet.
Oh, there were those who stated that the Darkness had always been there. That magic had always been lurking in the background, pushed to the side by rational science. There were others who stated it had started with an experiment in particle accelerators and a rip in the fabric of space/time. There were others who made other statements.
The textbooks though, all agreed. It had started in China. On a blustery winter day, communications had stopped in one area not that far from Beijing. By the time anyone outside the country knew that something was very wrong, the news reports had begun detailing the War going on in the streets of Beijing and cameras wielded by very shaky cameramen were giving people sights that some dismissed as computerized special effects. At least until the War came to their doorstep.
Vampires, werewolves, skeletal warriors, demonic beings, creatures of elemental fire, zombies, dragons, and worse. Against them were, well, vampires and werewolves and dragons and beings of light and other things.
That which went bump in the night was now bumping around quite openly.
Within five days China was no more. Areas of Asia and Europe were in turmoil. The United States sued for peace and sent ambassadors to try and find someone to negotiate with, there currently being that sort of administration in power. The containment technology and pokedexes and such were all at least borderline magic. The pokegirls themselves bonded with a trainer. A little blood given every month allowed them to bond with a human.
Nekomatta, vampira, wolven, and all the other varieties of pokegirls. Children of humanity and of the very Darkness that had destroyed it.
As for the forces of light, it was understood after some time why they hadn't aided more.
They were losing. Maybe in other branches of the battle they were doing better, but they were losing in this area.
Humanity had to learn, to advance, to develop, and to fight its own battles.
There was a term - 'survival ethics' - which simply meant that more civilized rules had to be put on hold when surviving for a long period was questionable at best. Hence the arena circuit, missions to reclaim bits and pieces of lore or territory, and things that might have been unethical prior to 199x were now accepted behavior.
Professor Oak was a specialist in pokegirls. With whatever Ash could get from him - it would set Ash's future on a path. Whether he would survive it was another thing altogether.
As it was, he was:
