Of course, there were all sorts of reasons to do that, as the various trains of thought differed on just why it worked as such. Some thought that it was some sort of instinctual identification of the trainer as a parent, which would let the 'newborn' more readily identify a trainer as an authority figure. Others considered the simple act of being shown caring and affection as something that a pokegirl could appreciate and respond well to. And there were those who just thought that being there would set the person as the leader of the pokegirl's pack.
Ash simply did it because it seemed to be the right thing to do.
So he let her lay with her head in his lap, and stroked his hand over her drying red hair. The sight of her growing so quickly was a suprise, but he tried not to react to it. However, the identifying markers, such as smooth skin, the ability to breathe underwater and the adaptations needed to be at ease in swimming were already apparent. She'd be a water type, and thus have all the strengths and weaknesses that would come with it.
But that was for later. Right now, he was getting used to the fact that she was his pokegirl, something that he'd imagined for so long that it was still a bit unreal now that it had actually happened. "Misty..," he whispered, trying out her name, and tried not to chuckle nervously as he realised what a life altering experience this would be.
And so he sat, letting her rest up while:
