The ribbed material felt something like the rubber section at the end of a pencil, was slightly translucent, and formed around all pokegirls in this process. Ash had seen a film of it, and so he knew what to do.
Which was to help his pokegirl free herself from the confines. By doing so, he established a bond with her from the start.
What he hadn't realized from that film was the noise level - the shifting hum of the Apparatus in the background was almost where he'd have to shout to be heard by the Professor. There was also the smell. The chrysalis smelled pretty horrible, Ash had no idea what it smelled like with his limited experience in such things.
Ash moved as quickly as he could, his hands peeling away the outer layer and helping the slender form within to free herself.
"This is the birth form," said the Professor in the background, pausing before he returned to those still in the conference room. "She'll assume the form of her breed after she's eaten the chrysalis and rested."
Ash nodded. The form wasn't that different from a human child of about five years age. There were little indications of what breed she'd be, but he was too busy to focus in on those right at the moment.
She ate quickly, voraciously, and her body language was all wrong for a human. Crouching there like that, her slick wet skin, glowing eyes, fangs - it was easy to see her lack of humanity. She finished eating the chrysalis about halfway through it, her belly noticeably distended. Then she slept.
Ash carried her off to the next room as the automatic machinery cleared things up for the next candidate.
It'd take an hour, perhaps two, but then she'd be at her "adult" first-stage form and looking much more human. In the meantime he was a comforting presence for the sleeping child and she'd accept him all the more. Then he'd have his career set for his own future.
