Obsidian was also fairly good as a building material against fire. While the force of the blasts rocked it, the fires couldn't do any serious damage.
Which just made it better as far as Kepeskixen was concerned. Her opponent would last a little longer.
Indirect attacks were tried. As the golem approached the wall again, a mage cast "Wall Of Iron" and then toppled it.
The next blast of dragonflame melted a portion of the iron.
"Save it," advised the Prince, looking up at the dragon. "I got an idea but it'll only work if you keep a really good blast in reserve."
Kepeskixen snorted and launched a physical assault on the golem.
Ranma shook his head. Dragons.
Ryoko looked at the creature before her and realized that THAT wasn't quite the opponent she wanted to face.
"Hmph, a golem with spell resistance and an inertial barrier," said an old man, watching the fight nearby. "I see they're stripping away a few of the enchantments as they go but those two keep renewing themselves."
"That's bad, isn't it?" asked Ryoko Mitsurugi.
"An inertial barrier slows the movement of things passing it, so arrows and even dropped items like that iron wall have little effect. Even dragonfire is slowed and lacks some of its punch. The spell resistance means that directly hitting it with magic isn't an option." The old man hmmphed. "Not too shabby for spider lovers."
"So it's still vulnerable to swords?" asked Ryoko.
"Depends on how much magic is involved," said the old man. "That wooden one just doesn't have the necessary penetration for this job."
Ryoko looked from her bokuto to the obsidian spider and saw the old man's point.
"You might consider going down to Olaf's," suggested the old man.
"Who's 'Olaf'?" asked Ryoko, still watching the fight.
"Olaf Clinkingbeard. Runs an Adventurer Supply Store down near the Docks." The old man sighed. "When I was younger this would have been right up my alley and exciting. Nowadays it's just annoying. Of course, if I'd known I'd live this long I would have taken better care of myself."
"You're an adventurer?" asked Ryoko looking over stooped old man briefly. Looked half past ancient to her eyes.
"You might say so," said the old man. "I was what they call a kensai - a master of the sword who became one with his chosen weapon."
"Oh?" said Ryoko, eyeing the old man's staff now. It was likely one of those hidden blade weapons. Now that she knew to look, she could see the thin line that seperated hilt from scabbard.
"There's a lot of retired adventurers around here," confided the old man. "Oh dear. Hang on a moment."
Ryoko glanced back at the battle and saw it immediately. The large section of wall that had been flung aside by the spider and was now steadily growing to fill her field of vision. She brought up her bokuto, not sure of what she could do.
The old man moved in a blur. His "walking stick" came apart, revealing a silvery white blade for a brief moment, before his feet touched the oncoming stone and he bounced back.
The now-two sections of wall crashed to either side of them.
The old man began coughing and hacking, bent over in half while he tried to wheeze in some air. "Damn. I really hate this getting old stuff."
Ryoko continued to stare at the old man.
Nodoka Saotome was happy.
She had watched the videos and made the connection quickly enough.
Her son was alive, currently the prince of a magic kingdom, and had girls after him. Lots of girls after him. A truly insane number of girls after his buns.
Manly? Well, she still had some lingering doubts, but in the main she thought it quite likely that he was indeed a man among men.
When she went to the market or did some shopping, she could hear all the gossip about her son and be fairly pleased at the number of young ladies who admired his physical status or just plain wanted to ravish him.
The sole point of unhappiness was that Genma had NOT contacted her as yet. While he might have his reasons, when her son's marriage was drawing near - she wanted very much to be present for such considerations.
Yuriko Nikaidou was standing near the reporter and gaping as the castle was assaulted. "BIG spider."
Nuke Usagimaru nodded. "Their spells and weapons only seem to annoy it."
Rally Vincent frowned. "If only I had a grenade launcher."
